Save or toss?
Comments (6)take the latin names provided.. and go to GOOGLE IMAGEs ... and see which matches ... and if they both do.. then you think to yourself.. hmmmm.. there must have been a name change in the past... and then you decide thats way more info then you will ever need .. lol ... no need to take someones word for it ... followup on the suggestions... and never forget.. just because it has a fancy latin name ... doesnt mean it worthwhile to keep.. even weeds have such ... so after you get the ID... you find out if you want to encourage it.. or be done with it ... and the trick there would be to find out if it is annual or perennial.. and head to those forums.. should no one hear advise such ... ken...See MoreReine des Violette.... Going to toss it!!??
Comments (45)Just as an update, here is a photo of my Reine des Violettes, taken this morning. This is the color the leaves have always been, with no soil amendments, nothing at all done to change the ph. Soil is quite alkaline, and we get very little rainfall, so she gets regular city water, but not that much (neighbors are water-sipping Salvia mellifera, a CA native Salvia cross, and multiple CA native grasses). She is planted near the base and smack in the root zone of an 80+ foot tall ash tree, so the soil is anything but rich (fairly sandy and rocky). On the latest water company annual report the average ph of the water was 7.8 (with a range during the year of 7.3 to 8.5). Rarely have I fertilized this rose, and if I do it is only with fish emulsion diluted to 1/2 strength recommended on the bottle, and she has to share with 4 or 5 other roses a 2-gallon watering can dose among them. RdV grows in England on chalk which is very alkaline and in my garden which is also alkaline. I do realise others are having problems with pale leaves, but perhaps alkalinity is not the problem. If it isn't then all the acid soil amendments and fertilizers won't fix it. And from what I've been reading about what people that do get the pale leaves/pink flowers on their plants is, that those treatments are not successful. That gets me back to the point that maybe the assumption of what the problem is, well, isn't it....See MoreAttempting to save mystery plants. I.D. and advice?
Comments (11)Well, firstly, and more important than a name for them is if you want to save them they need to come out of whatever they are planted in at the moment. What is the soil you've used, it looks like ordinary garden soil maybe? They are definitely succulents and that being the case I use a free draining gritty mix made up of equal amounts of small gravel, perlite, bark chips and very gritty cactus mix (some may not advise this last ingredient as some C&S mixes are very peaty, so be careful here with what you use, if you can't get a good one, lessen the amount of it). It needs to be damp, that's all, don't water until you see signs of growth. Cut of any brown/dead/decaying end of their stem and let them dry for a day or so, it won't harm them, then plant in your new mix. A name may well come in soon, but they will not do well in that soil I'm certain. Hope this helps. Gill UK...See MoreDo you save/toss old stationery?
Comments (12)Being a frugal person I like to recycle. I would use the paper cutter to cut the paper into 4ths. You can stick them in a decorative box by the phone etc. Also I have made "bound" note pads by putting a stack of the paper pieces between 2 rulers, then use rubber bands or clamps to hold them tight between the rulers. Take white glue and put a somewhat thick layer on the end of the papers to make a tablet out of them. Let the glue dry and put another layer or two on the ends again. It might take some time, but then you have a great notepad to use. I have even used these pads for gifts when I have had nice paper to use. If you do crafts, you might make paper beads out of them. Use them to dab brushes when you are painting etc. Ok... so I have too much time on my hands!...See Morekerrizonasteen
