Orange Waves and Other Heirloom Sale Roses

Heirloom keeps having tempting sales, but, so far, I have resisted. I have been curious about ORANGE WAVES, as I have never heard from anyone who has it. Also, what about some of the other ones, like FRAGRANT MASTERPIECE, SCARLET VELVET, LOUISE CLEMENTS and BRAVEHEART???

I can attest that Braveheart is a fabulous shrub rose and for those who live up north like me, it is a hardy rose, deep wine red color. I have had it for at least 10 to 12 years and would never want to be without it, particularly if I was one of those who was interested in landscape plantings and not interested in giving it special attention. It is a well-behaved shrub, growing to 3 to 3.5 ft with a spreading habit. . . . Jan

I spent a good hour drooling over this sale and had at least a dozen "must have" roses from this listing before I noticed a small statement at the top of the page. Apparently they only want orders where they can ship the roses immediately (including the line "regardless of zone"), not with the potential for ordering now for spring shipment. I understand the logic, since companies want to clear out summer stock in preparation for new plants for next summer, but for those of us in cold zones it really counts us out. I might be able to handle planting a gallon size rose in July, but a band size rose in August has very little chance of surviving my winters in my experience without enough chance to build a good root structure. I'd love to hear if this line is in error, but I since I've never seen that line on an Heirloom page I think it's not subject to negotiation. I'll have to hang onto my list and check back later this fall/winter to make my order for next spring. Regardless, for those of you in warmer zones there are some absolutely terrific roses for sale, many of whom are down to $8.50. Cynthia

sunnishine - Francis Dubreuil was a "he", not a "she". He was the rose breeder that first hired Antoine Meilland (Papa Meilland) to work with roses when Antoine was just 16. Antoine ended up marrying Francis' only daughter, Claudia, making Francis the grandparent to the son of Antoine and Claudia, who was also named Francis. The younger Francis' other grandparent (Antoine Meilland's mother) was Grand'mÃ¨re Jenny, which also happens to be a lovely HT rose from 1950. Francis Meilland was the breeder of "Peace". Your history lesson for today is now completed.

Heirloom pink roses sale - OGR, Scarborough fair, others

So $33 for a gallon isn't a great sale, but if you get the free shipping it's alright. They've got pink roses on sale, and I know someone on here was asking about Scarborough Fair earlier. They've even got some of their pink OGRs in the sale too!

Last chance sale for Abraham Darby at Heirloom Roses

When Heirloom sent out a notice it would be the last chance for own root Abe Darby, I immediately hit the buy button, now I am so glad. This morning I raced through the chores, finished watering the pot ghetto, and almost went in without smelling my first Abraham Darby bloom. Abe's piteous little bull nosed bud struggled to open from months of relentless rain. Even stunted , that frilly petal packed , sublimely tea perfumed rose is why I bought Abe again and would say it is without a doubt my favorite rose in the world.

Thanks for the information, Jan and Peachikeen! I feel my self weakening! Every Heirloom rose I have has done beautifully, and shrub roses are the newest rage in the Rose Society! But - I have to shovel prune to have room and since I did that already in spring, the ones I have left are all behaving. I hate to have a pot ghetto - but I'm considering a small one!

Well they have a sale this week WITH NO POSTAGE CHARGES-a 4.95 handling fee only. Considering I spent 67 bucks on 2 roses from them 2 months ago with all those costs added in, I'd say this was a deal!!!

Peachiekien those pictures of Louise Clements melted me. Other photos that I have seen it looks like that brassy orange that I don't like. I love the color of your photos. Are the photos true to the coloring? It looks nearly thornless. Please tell me more, disease resistance, repeat bloom, shade tolerance, anything that you know. Like Will Smith's character in 'Independence Day' said, "I gotta get me one of these."

Fragrant Masterpiece is as it's name, fragrant. I have two because of the fragrance. Mine is pink with a hint of peach coloring. The blooms were large this year due to it's age.
Louise Clements is a nice one too.

Fortunately, Carla, I read your note too late, as I already have my last order from Heirloom - or what better be my last this year! I did get LOUISE CLEMENTS and then decided to get AMAZING GRACE also. I hope that will be as fragrant as your FRAGRANT MASTERPIECE.

I seem to have gone Heirloom crazy this year, as I previously bought IMAGINE, GENEROSITY, WELL-BEING, NEW ORLEANS, DISTANT THUNDER and ROBERT CLEMENTS. They are all doing well. I think it was a partial result of their sales, plus the fact that my previous roses from them looked particularly spectacular this year - PEACH SILK, LADY OF THE MIST, THE IMPRESSIONIST, and HIGH SHERIFF. Now I have to get back to my attempts at recovering from being a rosaholic.

Thanks for all the advice! And, if I ask again, please tell me they are all ugly!
