I'd like to nominate Griffith Buck for sainthood.

Over the winter I lost Sharifa Asma, Robusta, a rugosa (well, it was run over by the snowplow), two Gertrude Jekylls, and three Scarlet Meidilands. Then we got an unheard-of freeze in May that killed off the buds and tips of all the roses except for William Baffin. But William didn't have time to feel smug because he got attacked by a record number of rose slugs. He looks pretty wretched still.

But the Bucks I planted last year--Quietness, Earth Song, Prairie Sunrise, and Aunt Honey--look wonderful. Quietness has produced loads of blooms, and Aunt Honey isn't far behind. The others are well on their way. Foliage, buds . . . all healthy.

Thank you, Dr. Buck!!
