Pet safe, clean mulch?

I am in need of mulch to place around the knockouts and the Bonica's I planted around my parking lot, but since we are a dog grooming shop we have tons of dogs coming in and out every day (up to 40) and I want something that is safe and not messy, since I cannot guarantee my clients will keep their puppies out of my beds. I am planning on putting up borders, but they will probably not keep out the dogs 100%, so I need some advice. Most of the ones I have looked at at Lowes are not labled safe and our local nursery just looked at me like I was crazy.

My hubby wants me to use the rubberized shredded recycled tires, but I refuse cause that is not eco friendly and will not help the soil at all plus make it hard to clean up...

Pinestraw is out cause I know how bad that is to clean up.

I am using pea gravel in my elevated beds and my pots, so I am not oppsed to that, but was hoping for something that would aid in fertilizing when it decomposes.

hee-hee, well you're not crazy; they just don't realize that some dogs will eat anything! under the sun and I can see your concern especially since you own a dog-grooming salon..When I lived in an apartment complex I remember this very! cute beautiful Pomeranian that would actually try to eat lavarocks out of all things, LOL!

It's true that many mulch that Lowe's or Home Depot carry have artificial coloring added to them and in all likelihood some sort of additive to make them "last longer"... It's the nurseries that you want to visit...They will carry the all-natural stuff...rhizo's suggestions work real well...plus pine bark is excellent! for roses. They really like those...

Nate, it sounds like the following is too late, since your work has already begun, but for what it's worth: We had 4 new roofs (entire house) and everything that that entailed (remove old roofs, put on new + gutters & downspouts) and new stucco siding on one side of the house's addition (hence, remove all old stucco, too). Contractor also created a new profile for the eave over that side of the house; also made and installed a copper overhang for the window on that side. Not all of this was done at the same time; still, a lot of construction materials and debris. Used the same contractor and his small crew for everything. The crew was able to do the roofing job by accessing all the roofs from the patio; the main issue was roof debris that ended up on the ground. They were exceedingly careful and neat but even now, I do find the occasional nail and bits of roofing material. For the stucco work, however, they needed to erect and safely access scaffolding. I asked the contractor to try to protect a daylily bed directly under the side of the house needing that work. For various reasons, I couldn't dig up the plants in it, even though it contained some daylilies I value a lot (eg LAST SNOWFLAKE, NEON FLAMINGO, COWBOY SCARF, MABOU, Jack Carpenter patterns, and more), so he set up the scaffolding on a large piece of plywood that was placed on cinder blocks on either end of the bed (and with two blocks supporting the mid part of the wood). The crew had to access the scaffolding of course, so one end of the bed got badly trampled & the soil very compacted. Even so, given what had to be done to the house, and the time they spent doing it, the daylilies sailed through everything in near perfect condition. There was a lot of bent and torn foliage, but it was late autumn anyway so that didn't matter. Plus, it was the crowns I'd been concerned about. We plan to use the same guys to paint the house's exterior next spring. Since I don't know exactly which month that will be, I expect to have to dig up the entire bed. Even so, I'll ask the contractor to once again place scaffolding on plywood on cinder blocks. The idea will be to protect the soil from compaction so that I can use that bed again as soon as the work is done.

Cleaning a Self-cleaning oven safely?

Yesterday I successfully cleaned my self-cleaning gas oven. First I bought two bottles of Easy Off Fume Free. During the day, I sprayed one interior wall at a time, closed the door for two hours, and when the two hours was up, I wiped out most of the greasy black gook. I did remove the oven racks. It took all day to do the six walls, but it looked presentable. I was especially pleased that the door was clean. Then around ten at night, I set the self-clean controls to run from midnight to 3 am. I locked the oven door and went to bed. One thing I also did was leave the range hood exhaust fan on for the night. My daughter came home after midnight and smelled fumes so she opened some windows. When I got up at 4 am (yes,I'm an early riser) I shut off the fan and looked inside. Just some gray dust on the walls, which was easily removed with some wet rags. I am so pleased. Yes, it might be "overkill", cleaning by both methods, but it worked for me. I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving with my almost-new looking oven!

It may have to be their assessment of adoptability. The one-eyed dog I mentioned above -- when I finally found the owner, they ended up dumping him at the pound because his eye was grossing them out. I was talking with the pound and they told me no one would want him and they wanted to just euthanize him. Well, he went to live on a beautiful horse farm with lots of buds. Living my dream!! I was just over on the link. It looks like actually sponsoring a dog means you'll pick up whatever expenses are associated with readying him for adoption -- the spaying, shots, etc. That makes him easy for take out. Either to a real home or to a foster or rescue group. Those groups spend a fortune saving animals, they need all the help they can get. They rely on donations to keep going. Taking in another animal is a financial consideration as well. I wouldn't worry about that part. The money is needed to move the dog along in the direction of a forever home. I would think that the more money they've invested in an animal, the less likely he would be put down, over one that still needs expensive work done. It actually looks like Bruce isn't at the front of the line. There are dogs there in the 600s, longer than him. So if they think he's adoptable, he may have more time than some of the others. So many sweet looking dogs there. So many irresponsible owners : ( (Sorry I'm too beat to proof : )

I too have a self-cleaning oven feature that I've never used (on this current oven, that is), because I've got a parrot andf they really can be killed by things that don't affect other pets (like non-stick cookware coatings) - there's a very good reason canaries were used as mine safety checks prior to environmental samplers, birds are highly susceptible to gases that mammals don't detect. What I do is a hot soapy water dampened towel to soak off baked on gunk and then a green scrubby, or the Method bathroom scrub (well rinsed off before cooking in the oven again.) That said, I think the cat would be okay - I never had a problem using self-cleaning before getting the parrot, and I've always had cats and dogs. My 20 year old siamese has been through several oven cleaning cycles in her life, and she always just vacated the room until the smell dispersed.

Red cedar is a nice mulch, and takes a little longer to break down. It is reddish in color, but not eye-popping red. (I hate dyed-red mulch!) Premium western cedar mulch is darker in color and takes a lot longer to break down. Plain pine mulch will work just as well. I don't trust cypress mulches to be sustainably harvested. Just don't get anything dyed and you should be good to go.

I don't know any reason why shredded hardwood mulch wouldn't be safe for dogs--even if they eat it. Most of it is sterilized to kill weeds, but the gases dissipate after its been spread. So maybe spread it on a three-day week-end if you can. Dog stomachs are pretty hardy, considering what dogs eat. Unlike shoes, rubber balls and teddy bears, it's organic; unlike cat turds, it hasn't been through a digestive system picking up worms and germs; unlike 10-day old dead squirrels and birds, it doesn't have small, brittle bones.

I used just plain shredded cedar mulch in our very front rose bed. It packed down great and I'm hoping will break down easily so I can just refresh it next year. Bagged it wasn't that pricey and I feel safe with it around our neighbors puppy.

I was going to suggest compost mixed with coffee grounds. That would probably work but above mentioned puppy came over to my house this morning and promptly stuck his whole head in a five gallon bucket of the wet (from rain) coffee grounds. Since I put those grounds around my roses this morning I'm hoping there isn't something so interesting about them that he starts digging in my rose bed now:)

Chocolate mulch is unsafe for animals as there is an article posted on the board at our Vets office.
We have been using red cedar mulch for years now with no problems to our pets.

We have used Western Bark Mulch for 20+ years, with no problems, and we have always had multiple dogs here.

Never had a problem, tho some youngsters will find a large chunk, and play with it.

Jim's right about that cocoa-mulch, with the wonderful chocolate smell. It can be deadly to dogs.

I use the very small redwood bark chips in my yard. I have corgis -- well known (infamous) for eating absolutely anything. Mine don't eat the bark. I do make sure it's natural from a nursery supply, not the colored stuff from the big box stores. I've never had any health problems.

The dog websites and the AKC health websites all have warnings about cocoa hulls. Don't ever use them. Terribly poisonous and they smell truly yummy to dogs.

This will sound odd, but the one lesson I learned about getting bark chips is that the size of the chips counts. How shall I delicately put this? If you feel you will need to pooper scoop in the bark chips, make sure the chips are a different size than the stuff you scoop or it will camaflouge itself and be very hard to find it to scoop it. I went to the really small size chips and now scooping is easy. Only a fellow dog person could have this discussion!

The dogs drag in mulch all the time. I just consider the house a poorer, shady extension of the garden away. ;)

@ Kate : Just an FYI ... Coffee (including coffee grounds) is very dangerous for pets and is on the poisonous list at our veterinarians office.
