There are a dozen or more different kinds of serviceberries, both shrub and tree. Some shrubs get to 4ft, some to 25 ft. Tree forms get from 10 ft to 40 ft, depending on species. You will need both latin names of the shrub you bought, then you can search that name to see which one you have. The most commonly sold serviceberry is Amelanchier arborea, usually a multistemmed shrub that gets to 20 to 25 ft. It can be trained as a tree but will tend to send up root shoots. A. laevis, Allegany or smooth Serviceberry is a nice tree form getting to 30ft, if you can find it. Return to the nursery, ask for the latin name and ask them how big it gets. Hi, Last year, I discovered a hedge-row of juneberries that were around 7' tall x 4' wide and featured small, blueish berries that were exceedingly sweet; they consisted of a rush of thin branches. They tasted nothing like the Amelanchier canadensis, A. x grandiflora 'Autumn Brilliance, or the wild A. laevis (I think) I am familiar with. I have a feeling that these would be A. stolonifera (running serviceberry). I have heard it said that A. alnifolia (Saskatoon serviceberry) will not do well in the Northeast (New Jersey), except for perhaps the cultivar 'Regent'. Is anyone particularly familiar with A. alnifolia and A. stolonifera. I'm looking to see if I can plant a number of A. stolonifera seedlings instead of A. alnifolia and get as good a flavor; I've heard that A. alnifolia is the best serviceberry - yet others say A. laevis or A. x grandiflora tend to produce the best flavor. We were having some problems with Simba accepting Jas-purr and Coco .. after more than 5 months, Simba is beginning to relax a little around them. Rjinga, I think some kittens are just so bold, even though a huge cat's body language is telling them to stay away, the kitten is just not bothered -- that's the type Coco is, and I let her learn that she needs to take Simba and Nikita seriously, now after a few slaps from Simba she's learnt her lesson. Simba is a big boy and growls like a tiger, real menacing, but that had no effect on Coco, she needed those (supervised) whacks I think LOL Niki's face tells the kittens when to stay away (other times Niki will lick their faces like mad). Jas-purr goes into the submissive posture as soon as he senses Simba/Niki getting mad. I think Tiger, even though he's deaf, knows that Charlie isn't very happy with his mischief, but probably just doesn't care -- bold kitten! Doesn't Charlie ever slap him? Sometimes it's the only way they learn (poor babies). And although he loves water, he might find that a squirt isn't all that pleasant, so you could try that out. And I remember your first thread about Tiger ... does he still eat a lot? Our kittens are in that phase now I guess ... they LOVE to eat.

hi im not sure that is a tree lilac .... in the sense its grafted to a standard ... its a shrub pruned up ... if we have a big flower spring.. i wouldnt be surprised if it bends over .... which may or may not be good ... i would ignore the dead parts.. until spring.. perhaps they will bud out ... if not.. prune them out in later spring ... since you have the 5 year deck plan.. im not sure i would spend patio money on trying to replace it.. in tree/shrub time ... if you were to plant something on the larger side.. its going to take 2 or 3 years to get established.. and start growing with any vigor ... in other words ... it probably wont be accomplishing any goals.. until the year you might remove it for patio works ... [though on rereading.. im not quite sure if it will be removed for the patio] ... if its a permanent installation ... then it might be worthwhile to replant something ... im not sure i would be betting on much shade.. from a shrub ... you might want to include some type of pergola/roof or something ... for the new patio ... or at least.. design so it can be added later ... a little planning ahead .. even if the future budget doesnt materialize ... how far away.. are the neighbors you are hiding from??? ... has to be a pretty good distance .... i would also expect ... that it will put out new trunks next year ... a lilac not going to stay with that few trunks .... will not stay in that form .... ken
