Two recommendations: 1) try EverClean ES unscented (which for some reason, still has a scent!). IMO it works the best at controlling odors (except freshly made poop--nothing helps with that!). We never smell cat pee with it and we did notice a big difference when we tried Pet Gold years ago, and even Tidy Cat with Crystals Blend. 2) If he's not neutered, do so. Intact male cats have a VERY noticeable odor to their urine (and it takes short while for that to go away after neutering).

I don't know if they still make the litter with cedar in it, but that was the only kind one of my cats would use. But I can't recommend it because it gave her asthma. So I had to change it, but she punished me terribly for doing so (urinating outside the box to punctuate her displeasure).

As to the rivalry, I'd be firm with the young one that *attack behaviour* is not okay. Your older girl kitty should not be traumatized in her home. If time proves his behaviour is not going to change, then I'm afraid I have to say you should rehome him. JMO

Since it's been a LONG time since I have had a kitten in the house, is there any room for this to be just kitten stuff that he will grow out of? I agree and have intervened with him when he does his stalking of her and jumping on her. He is not allowed to do that, but it's not always possible to grab him EVERY time...

We also have 2 miniature chihuhuas that are his size, and initially he jumped on them too, it seemed to be more in a playful mode, but they didn't like it one bit and growled and snapped at him, that along with our snatching him up and tossing him away every time, and he's about stopped it with them, but not with Charlie the cat....she still runs away from him...If I could just get her to stand still and wallop him a few times, he'd be less interested.

we will keep doing what we are doing, and I'm sure things will settle down...I too just am sick that she (charlie) is terrified in her own house...Interestingly enough, when they are OUTSIDE together, she is ok with him, it's kinda strange.

Neutering may help. But I think you may be right on the kitten thing, too.

My oldest female HATED my youngest when we got her. She was beyond hyper active and jumped on anything that moved. And she had no fear. No nips, no growls, no chasing, no whaps to the head phased her. Eventually, I think partially as she settled down, she stopped doing it so much, and I think she realised that the other animals were really not going to tolerate her behaviour.

Now, its funny to see, because its usually my eldest that initiates pouncing and fighting time.

I think once your eldest gets a little more used to him being there, she may take things into her own hands and give him a good what for. Or he may get bored of chasing something that never plays back. He's doing what kittens do. Although like I said, neutering may calm him down and stop a little bit of the dominant behaviour. It might not be noticable for a little while, though.

Do you only have the one box? With two cats, you probably should get two; that might help the situation.

I'd definitely get the kitten neutered. It may help the aggression issues...and then again, it may not. We got our male about 8 months after we got our female, and he never stopped his aggression on her. We finally put him on Clomicalm, and that has helped a lot. I swear, though, if I ever get two cats again, I'm going to get two females from the same litter.

Forgot to mention one important thing...the kitten is deaf...and so all the hissing, growling and warnings she gives him literally fall on deaf ears....I know he can see her expressions and when he does, he usually backs off (her mouth open, spitting at him)

He's getting fixed soon, we just had a big vet bill for the dog, and it drained me ($400) so next month!!!

thanks for all the advice...I"m sure it will work out for them...It just breaks my heart because Charlie was always such a laid back and sweet cat, and this little rascal has put demons in her head....When she was little (she too was a stray that we found at the park and adopted) I had another older cat and SHE did the same thing to him....He finally stopped running from her and she gave up tormenting him...It's all in the thrill of the chase, you can just see the energy flowing....

Here's another vote for Ever Clean Unscented. It is so good I filled my two-cat litter box with it in May. One of my two cats has renal failure and urinates a lot! I scoop it once or twice a day. Discard the clumps in regular garbage,don't flush or put in compost. With regular scooping, I have not had to fully empty the litter box since May. The box stays dry and clean and odor-free. The bad news is I add more Ever Clean as needed, and I am going through a 14 pound box every week. It's both heavy and expensive, at $9.88 a box inmcluding salestax. Hey, maybe I can claim my two cats as dependants on my tax return!

I like Feline Fresh it is a pine clumping litter and keeps the smell to nothing.

I agree with getting him fixed and getting a 2nd litter box. You said you grab him when he pounces her, have you tried spraying him with a shot of water when he does? It may make more of an impression.

water....let me tell you about water and this crazy cat....He get's in the shower almost every morning with my husband...(and get's wet, yes) and doesn't seem to mind at all...he's intrigued by it...after the shower, he will sit on the edge of the sink and watch him brush his teeth, watching of course, the water....then the toilet...well you get the picture....

I would have considered a squirt bottle, but I"m afraid he'd think it was a reward instead of a punishment....he's a strange little character....cute as a bug...but strange.

We were having some problems with Simba accepting Jas-purr and Coco .. after more than 5 months, Simba is beginning to relax a little around them. Rjinga, I think some kittens are just so bold, even though a huge cat's body language is telling them to stay away, the kitten is just not bothered -- that's the type Coco is, and I let her learn that she needs to take Simba and Nikita seriously, now after a few slaps from Simba she's learnt her lesson. Simba is a big boy and growls like a tiger, real menacing, but that had no effect on Coco, she needed those (supervised) whacks I think LOL Niki's face tells the kittens when to stay away (other times Niki will lick their faces like mad). Jas-purr goes into the submissive posture as soon as he senses Simba/Niki getting mad.

I think Tiger, even though he's deaf, knows that Charlie isn't very happy with his mischief, but probably just doesn't care -- bold kitten! Doesn't Charlie ever slap him? Sometimes it's the only way they learn (poor babies). And although he loves water, he might find that a squirt isn't all that pleasant, so you could try that out.

And I remember your first thread about Tiger ... does he still eat a lot? Our kittens are in that phase now I guess ... they LOVE to eat.

Pranjal...sounds like you really can relate :) Yes Charlie smacks him plenty...and really it's only when she does smack him that he backs off...but she wont do it all the time...and often she runs from him...and that's just fuel for the fire....

I'll go ahead and try the water bottle...that worked very well on a cat I had before both of these two...

Tiger's appetite has stabolized some, but he's pretty insistant on 3 squares!!! And he used to beg alot whenever we ate...but that has improved as well...

The confusing thing with Charlie and Tiger is that there are many times when she is actually interested in playing with him...so I know she doesn't completely despise him....but I have to be tuned in at all times, because I dont always know if she's interested or not...and I dont want him to take advantage of her and make her more upset....

BUT I do believe that eventually they will work it out...

If Charlie does play with him some, and doesn't show signs of really attacking him, I think you're OK with letting them work it out on their own. Just this afternoon I saw Simba and Jas snoozing on the sofa, and although they were a foot apart from each other, it looked promising.

I know how you feel about Charlie being all stressed out; I feel the same way with Simba, I hate it that this sweet baby of mine is all tense and growly bcoz of Jas and Coco. All our foster kittens were accepted immediately by Max, and Simba's introduction into the feline family went smoothly. It's only now that I'm learning it really can take more than a few months for cats to truly adjust to one another. And sometimes they will only tolerate each other for as long as they live, but they will work it out.

I had issues with our new kitten with both agression, and stinkiness. She was even a bit flatulent! I mean she could pop some ripe ones. I never knew a kitty could smell so bad.

Right now we are using the Tidy Cats with Crystal Blend (it's clay with some crystals blended in). I have found it at Wal-Mart around here.

I do an occasional sprinkle of arm and hammer litter deoderizer in both the pan, and the waste in the bag. This litter has helped the trash can odor tremendously also.

Kitten is now nearly 7 months old. Older cat is more tolerant, and kitten is being a little less of a pest, although she's still quite a pistol.

And BTW The flatulence went away with vet-recommended teaspoon of cultured plain unflavored yogurt twice a day.

I have three cats and I like Scoop Away - scented or unscented, I haven't noticed a difference. But I think the clumping quality is among the best of clumping litters and I've tried them all!

I had a similiar problem when I brought home Henry (see my post my cat has FIP) to meet Roo, but Roo, who was a year older than Henry, showed all the signs of wanting and needing a playmate....it just took about 10 days to get fully used to the new boy and then I couldn't keep her away from him. Maybe your Charlie is beyond being patient with a kitten personality?? I have another cat, an old girl, no way, not interested in any play. I think the younger the cat the better the chance of getting along, but again I guess all cats are different.

I love cats but am/was so anti litter box.......all my cats had been outdoor cats until I decided I had lost too many of them to the dangers of the outside world. I now pay more for the flushable kind of litter, mainly the kind made out of the ground up corn husks?? It works great at masking any odor (you can buy extra strength for multiple cats)and I find flushing the waste down the toilet something I can do fairly frequently that keeps the smell down quite a bit.......very managable for someone like me who has a hard time with litterboxes!
