It's a plum, perhaps a greengage plum. They do well in the upper midwest.

Leaf looks like that of apricot tree.

So

is the fruit edible? or it just for looks?
how old would you guess that tree is btw?

we thought it was apricot also....but the fruit never ripens and the tree never has bugs.

Following up on John's suggestion and your comment that they don't ripen (I assume you mean they don't change color), perhaps you should look into the Greengage plum.

Wow i am shocked... this silly tree that grows over the fence every year and we trim it down quite abit is a fruit type tree,I am really shocked that the fruit is highly sought after? - is it really? anyone have anymore links for more info?
In case some one did not see above.......by looking at the photo - how old would you guess this tree is?

The greengage plum produces firm fruit with flesh and skin which remains green even when ripe.

If you want the tree to produce a crop of fruit for you, maybe you should research any pruning techniques which need to be used to stablize your prune tree and to help it produce its best yield of fruit each year. Also, prune the trees near it in a manner which will provide your prune tree with the right amounts of light that it needs to successfully produce that good crop of fruit.

It certainly is good that pests do not bother the tree and fruit.
