Happy with these new ones - and a camera whine

Nelson's Pride - indescribable pale peach color, long vase life, and really sweet fragrance.

Siren's Keep - lovely form, but edges of red petals white - I think our heat wave may be to blame. The plant is so tiny that she couldn't hold up the blossom - cut it quite close to crown, and trimmed off the "S" curve to get it into a vase. There's another bud, and I think after another day of our heat/humidity, it will be ready to cut tomorrow AM, and I'll see if it too has the whitened edges as it opens.

I need to figure out how to use a digital camera so I can post. I bought one but wound up giving it to my daughter because the controls were nearly impossible for me to see, never mind use. My business partner does all the photography for our real estate business- and we just bought a brand new camers, and it has the same size issue for me. 65 next month, with some arthritis in my hands and bad vision - I can't be the only one out here!

I wonder if Fisher Price has come out with a big button camera for kids?....

About cameras: I'm a retired professional photographer and the joy of my life is a small Canon PowerShot SD800 IS. I'll cry if I drop it and have to get something different.

I HATE learning a new camera, always have (even before needing reading glasses). I like equipment to become instinctive, so it flows and I don't have to "think" or read a dial.

The camera you already own may be just perfect for you. What you need to do is have someone (partner?) give you a tutorial that goes over the basics of what buttons you need to push without glasses. There are only a couple important ones (really).

Uploading them to GW can come later. That's not hard, just another tutorial :-) There's even a GW forum to practice uploading on. I used it when I was learning.

The one I gave my daughter is long gone - she and her husband have been through several since then. I will go look at the Canon - there is a real camera shop near me, not a discount chain.

It really depends on what you want to use it for. If all you want are quick snaps in good light, then almost any point & shoot camera will do. (And 6MP is plenty for prints up to 20"x30". I have several hanging on my walls now.) For challanging situations, the pack gets a lot smaller. But for true versatility in all situations, it's gonna cost you. For one thing, no one consumer camera can do it all. Period. Even a DSLR (which I have) requires different lenses and filters for wildly different lighting situations. Add to that artificial lighting (flashes) and you can see why I said it's gonna cost you. The true key to it all is to learn more about taking a photo than pointing the glass end towards the subject and pushing the shiney silver button. Not meaning to sound condescending, but that's the basic fact. If you don't understand the basics of exposure and the relationship between aperture and shutter speed then you will get a lot of disappointing shots. However, once you learn WHY a shot turned out bad, you can learn how to do it right. True, there will always be situations that you might not be able to get a good picture. But the more you understand about how photography works, the easier it will be to identify those situations in advance and plan accordingly. Like carrying a tripod in your car at all times. (I do...) I am a frequent reader and poster on dpreview.com and I see the same thing over and over....people buying a new camera because they think it will "do it" for them. Then being disappointed that it doesn't work any better than their old one. Wonder what didn't change? Image stabilization, for example, is a great tool, but it's not a magic bullet. Given the choice of IS (or VR in Nikon lingo) or a good tripod, I'd pick the tripod every time. But since that's not always practical, I also have one image stabilized lens and am loooking at getting another one. (Longer zoom.) That doesn't mean the tripod is going in the yard sale though. Hmmm...reading back over this I'm afraid I may have comme off a bit strong. What I'm saying is that you should make sure your camera is truly limiting you before looking at a new one. My first camera was a Fuji pro-sumer model that I bought because it had full manual control. I WANTED to learn the basics. I switched it to manual and left it there for several months. Only when I understood the choices the camera would make did I feel comfortable moving into ANY auto mode. And yes, I am VERY happy with my camera.... Click to enlarge in a new window.

Oh, Karen. I wasn't bored at all. I was totally enthralled by the ever changing colors. The first 2 daylilies are fantastic, whatever their true color. I understand wanting to share all of this beauty with someone who can appreciate it. My husband is not a gardener at all, but is so sweet to walk outside with me when I want to show him something. Bless his heart, he tries to show enthuriasm the best way he can. Plus he lets me garden as much as I want. Please keep posting your beautiful pictures. Ann

Hi Kathy, Sue here from Nor-Cal Daylily! My Mom has been raving about your pictures and since I just started back into roses and have gotten way too many in the past 2 months, I thought I'd come take a peek here. Great shots and great camera! I too got a new one as a surprise gift from my hubby, a belated Anniversary gift. It's a SLR Canon XTi. Still need to work on getting out of the automode. Now where are you hosting your images so you can post them here? That's what held me back from continuing to post here, it was hard to find a place to upload them to. I have uploaded all my rose images on HMF (by the way, I want to mention here that Beth's are always one of the best images on there, always the most accurate in coloring, I have admired them since I started looking there and am pleased to find her here as well. Hi Beth in No. Calif ""waving>>!) Anyways, like I mentioned, I have added hundreds of images on HMF because I have been going to the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden and Regan's Nursery (great sales!) several times throughout the summer and the beauty of the roses has sucked me back in. So now I am trying to balance the roses and daylilies and the myriads of other plants I collect on this small lot, it's a sickness I tell you. Sound familiar? Real estate envy for any of you on bigger properties!

How much are you willing to spend? I can highly recommend the latest Panasonic Lumix superzoom, the FZ35. Amazon has it for $322. I know several people who paid $400 when it was first released in September. Here are some sample photos from it: FZ35 photos on Flickr And it even takes gorgeous videos. Do a YouTube search on "FZ35" or "FZ38" (the model name in Europe) to see some.

oh sunnyside, we are on the same page. how i would like to be able to get to grips with cameras. my eyesight is deplorable so, i have tried bullying sweetheart and sons - 'stand there...NO, THERE and do not include the big thistle thing....no no. you have missed this, or that'. I am sure you know the scenario. There are times (few) when I think, mmmm this would be nice to share (boast about). Must, must sort it out without spending wads of money I don't have.

I am quite happy with my new Olympus E-600. It isn't that sort of camera that you brag about in your photographer friends party, but I was looking for a good all rounder, since sometimes I do photos for anthropological research and most of the time can't fiddle with lenses and setting in the middle of some event.

Overall I am quite happy about this Olympus, it works well on auto, although for macro shots I have to change ISO sometimes so I can shoot without flash. But if I set ISO lets say on 800 beforehand, I can just go on and not bother looking at the setting. It has very basic screen, which I prefer over all the teletuby screens of more "lifestyle" cameras. Screen setting are rather readable, simple font instead of the all fancy buttons. Also I like that it is not too heavy and I can hold it well without too much hand shaking (which is a problem if you shoot whole day), as well as I find it comfy for smaller female hand, so I have a good grip on it.

Besides that, it does night shots really well on night shot setting (there is just usual turning wheel, not an interactive menu to switch between auto, macro, night, action, etc.).

It may be not what you are looking for, but you might want to try it out at least. :)

Though, my zone is so different from yours, I'm not sure if your experience would be mine anyway, but I'm curious all the same.

It is still looking great in the vase, and the bud that I was going to cut has stalled out, no progress at all - I think everything is just shutting down with the heat wave we are experiencing. I was in the rain forest in Puerto Rico in the summer of 67, and I woke up dreaming about it this AM - and the air felt exactly the same....
