Red Maple: Old age, disease, dying?

We have a very large, old red maple in our yard. On the tops of many branches there is only bear wood with no bark. Occasionally these compromised branches break. Also the canopy seems to be thinning. Standing under the tree, you can actually look right up through to the sky. In the past the canopy was pretty much opaque. I am just wondering if it is time to say good-bye to this old tree before it comes crashing down on my deck/house, or perhaps this is normal for an old red maple. Thanks, Ted
