Garbage disposal...stinks!
Comments (9)Thanks for the input so far. No, it's not an island sink, yes, the drain is vented properly (to the best of my knowledge), yes, we've tried baking soda, and there's no plumbing issue anywhere in the house (we just had ALL the pipes replaced, including under the house, a few weeks ago)....See MoreWill this work: Composter & No Disposal?
Comments (10)As a keen composter, I have issues with a compost method that uses electricity to do something that can happen naturally outside - why add to your carbon footprint, while trying to reduce it? Be aware that you can only produce compost in two weeks by 'batch' composting - ie you load up your composter with the right proportions of greens and browns and then let it do its thing, in the right conditions. You cannot keep adding to it until its finished, emptied and you're ready to start again. If you don't want to go outside, consider a wormery. Alternatively, just do what most composters do: keep a plastic bucket with a lid under the sink and empty it regularly into your outside pile. You don't have to shovel or turn compost: Compost Will Happen: you only need to fuss with it if you want it quicker. FWIW, my mother has always (since a teen in WW2) keep a scrap pot in the corner of her sink, which was emptied into the 'pile' outside daily. Garbage disposals are a novelty where I come from. Not having one has never been a hardship....See MoreConsidering not installing a Garbage Disposer?
Comments (8)I like mine, but don't think it's a big deal either way. If you don't use it much, then why put one in. As to disposing of soups? (well, first of all why not eat them or freeze the leftovers)--it's not a big deal--all your wife or you have to do is set a collander in the sink, pour in the soup, and dispose of the solids that are left. It's not like it's a big hassle either way. Resale? a garbage disposal is nice to have, but I don't think anyone is going to consider a $200 appliance a deal-breaker if they love the house otherwise. Many won't even think to look for one, really. And--if you decide to--you could always install a cheap one when you decide to sell. Maybe discuss with your installer, if it would be possible to align things so it would be easy to install one at a later date if you change your mind. Personally, while I love having a disposal, myself, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a house without one, IF the house was otherwise perfect--a disposal is such a small thing when it comes to a house purchase. And there are a lot of people who DON'T like them, don't want them--so they'd be very happy. Why don't you informally keep track of things for a week or so and see how much you really do use the unit. If it's rarely, then go ahead with your plans and skip the disposal....See MoreGarbage disposal - height restriction/options-any recommendation?
Comments (1)When buying any disposal, you should make sure it is at least 3/4 hp and all stainless steel grind chamber. If your disposal does not have these features, you are asking for trouble in repairs and clogged plumbing. Even if you use the disposal minimally, you should get a 3/4 hp disposal, for the longevity and better construction, and for those rare times when you do put a lot of waste into the disposal. Insinkerator makes a disposal that fits your bill; it's the "Evolution Compact", and it is 3/4 hp with a stainless grind chamber. You mentioned batch feed disposers, but batch feeds are larger than continuous feed disposers, so a batch feed style won't work with your height constraints. There are actually only 2 disposal manufacturers - Waste King and Insinkerator. The other brands you might see like Kenmore, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid and Franke are re-badges of these two. I don't know if any of the re-badged brands have the names on the flange, but in any case, I think Ininkerator sells the "Compact" style only under its own name. I have a Waste King, and it does say "waste king" on the flange which bothered me when I first installed it, but now I don't even see it. It falls under the category--for me at least--of those tiny details that I obsessed over during my kitchen reno, but seem like nothing now.
