Garbage disposal - height restriction/options-any recommendation?

okay, so another choice to make :/

We need a smallish gd for 30" apron front clean-up sink. The height is important since we have a shorter cabinet due to deeper sink and the disposal outlet needs to be above the drain which is 12" (to top of pipe) above the cab floor. The bottom of the sink will be 20-1/2" above the cab floor.

We will use it minimally, not for food trash since we compost etc. So basically will be used to wash away those tiny pieces of food that I don't want to clog up the sink drain. We've been using a temporary sink for a few months and I have to say I don't like the small amts of food that inevitably go down the drain, even with keeping the strainer in there. So saying all that we don't need a large powerful one and I guess quiet and not real pricey would be good. We'll get a continuos feed most likely unless a batch feed fits the bill. The continuous feed we've had to this point hasn't been a problem. It will have a wall switch, and don't want the air switch on the counter.

Another thing albeit less important function wise is how the flange looks. This will be going in an apron front soapstone sink so looks are a factor. Do all of the sink flanges have the brand stamped on them like "Insinkerator" or "Waste King" does- I really wish I didn't have to see that everytime I look at the sink. Something a little less advertisement would be nice. Are there any just chrome or a silver metal?

I'm trying to do some comparison online but if you've got anything to offer please let me know.

When buying any disposal, you should make sure it is at least 3/4 hp and all stainless steel grind chamber. If your disposal does not have these features, you are asking for trouble in repairs and clogged plumbing. Even if you use the disposal minimally, you should get a 3/4 hp disposal, for the longevity and better construction, and for those rare times when you do put a lot of waste into the disposal. Insinkerator makes a disposal that fits your bill; it's the "Evolution Compact", and it is 3/4 hp with a stainless grind chamber. You mentioned batch feed disposers, but batch feeds are larger than continuous feed disposers, so a batch feed style won't work with your height constraints.

There are actually only 2 disposal manufacturers - Waste King and Insinkerator. The other brands you might see like Kenmore, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid and Franke are re-badges of these two. I don't know if any of the re-badged brands have the names on the flange, but in any case, I think Ininkerator sells the "Compact" style only under its own name.

I have a Waste King, and it does say "waste king" on the flange which bothered me when I first installed it, but now I don't even see it. It falls under the category--for me at least--of those tiny details that I obsessed over during my kitchen reno, but seem like nothing now.

I'm an engineer too and appreciate the inner workings and the details and manufacturing processes that are combined to make a quality product. Before deciding on a batch feed disposer, you need to check one critical bit of plumbing configuration. Batch feed disposers are taller and therefore hang down lower under the sink than a typical switched (air-switch or wall-switch) disposer. Because of this, the drain outlet on the disposer is also lower. It is critical that the outlet on the disposer be higher than the drain line opening on the wall at the back of your cabinet. If it isn't, the disposer will not drain properly, and you will always have water sitting in the bottom of the grind chamber of your disposer. This will significantly shorten the life of any disposer and could result in rotting food debris remaining in the bottom of the disposer. CHECK YOUR DIMENSIONS CAREFULLY. Be sure that the drain outlet on the disposer will be above the height of the drain outlet on the back wall of your cabinet. I really like batch feed disposers, but if a batch feed disposer doesn't work because of your plumbing configuration, then you definitely want a disposer with a wall switch or an air switch. Having to deal with a switch under the sink is a minor nuisance, but over time, a major annoyance. You don't want to go there. Personally, I prefer a wall switch, but there are many people on this forum who swear by the air switch arrangement. Just keep in mind that an air switch means one more thing on your sink deck that you will need to wipe around as you clean up around the sink.

@Robinmorris - you make good points, and many people like the continuous feed, and many people like the batch feed style. There is no right or wrong choice, just personal preference. Just to address your points about the cover for anyone else considering the batch feed disposal. I should have mentioned also that the batch feed disposal cover doubles as the sink drain stopper. When the cover is not pushed in to turn on the disposal it rests in the drain like any sink drain stopper so that the water can flow past it down the drain, or if you turn the cover, it stops the water, and you can fill up the sink. The cover will get grimy the way any stink stopper will, and you just clean it when you clean the sink. It won't get lost. No one walks away from the sink with the sink stopper in their hand. I've had batch feed disposals since I was growing up, and that is many decades, and the cover was never lost once.

Wireless Air Switch for Garbage Disposal?

I have not seen a wireless garbage disposal switch before, but having now seen it in your link, I am not at all tempted by it. Many of the reviews seem to be generated from other reviews of actual airswitch products with air hoses, rather than the RF-controlled electrical outlet that this purports to be. The product photo is of a white plastic disc with a red led light, while many "customer photos" are of stainless steel buttons mounted through a counter. Several of the more credible reviews speak of the product's wiring being incorrect, and a fake UL sticker appearing on it. I would put *no* faith in this product looking or behaving as it purports to, and while I appreciate wirelessness, there's much to be said for the longevity of hardwired, physically mounted switches over easily lost small plastic remotes. Personally, if I wanted to keep the deck free of obstruction I'd get a real, physical air switch and mount it through the face of the sink cabinet.
