Wireless Air Switch for Garbage Disposal?

Anyone heard of or use a wireless air switch before? I was browsing on Amazon and saw this one:

I'm trying to decide on an air switch or not. The sink is undermount and on an island so there aren't a lot of options but I really don't want to see it. The countertops will be white quartz and the fixtures which just include a single whole faucet and a soap dispenser will be polished chrome. I liked the idea of this because you wouldn't have to drill and you could keep on the countertop or in a drawer/cabinet if you wanted, but have to wonder how reliable it would be. Curious if anyone has any experience?

Yes, the air switch is quite common, and highly recommended. Do a search and you'll find lots of threads. Here are just 2 of them, but there are many more:

Never mind this is not the switch we have. We have a button on the countertop.

The wireless you show uses a remote. That would drive me batty. Where do you leave the remote?

ben - yes if it has or you add and appliance cord to power the disposal 86- call Mountain Plumbing and ask if they still sell the buttons as spare parts, other wise you should get the ISE brushed nickel as the others I know in SS all cost more than the "kits" in the link.

It is no longer part of the permanent wiring, it is a cord and plug connected load. The tamper requirement does not apply.

breezy, for some reason I have a hunch that they have never seen an airswitch. Remember....I think they are shocked about a "white" kitchen. I'll just mention it again in passing that the GD needs to be a plug in type. I'll make sure to buy the right one when I purchase the 2nd one. Thanks everybody. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't need a "special" brand that plugged in.

I have not seen a wireless garbage disposal switch before, but having now seen it in your link, I am not at all tempted by it. Many of the reviews seem to be generated from other reviews of actual airswitch products with air hoses, rather than the RF-controlled electrical outlet that this purports to be. The product photo is of a white plastic disc with a red led light, while many "customer photos" are of stainless steel buttons mounted through a counter. Several of the more credible reviews speak of the product's wiring being incorrect, and a fake UL sticker appearing on it. I would put *no* faith in this product looking or behaving as it purports to, and while I appreciate wirelessness, there's much to be said for the longevity of hardwired, physically mounted switches over easily lost small plastic remotes.

Personally, if I wanted to keep the deck free of obstruction I'd get a real, physical air switch and mount it through the face of the sink cabinet.

Cool product! You can mount the white button pretty much wherever you want. It has a 2 year satisfaction guarantee for any reason and it's very economical, so why not try it?

mumk1n - yes, I noticed the wiring problem mentioned in the reviews and was confused about the buttons, I think you're right and they have two different products together. I have an apron front sink though and there really wouldn't be anyplace to put the air switch in the cabinet, the only other cabinet is a trash pullout, perhaps it could go to the inside of the side of that? I'll have to think about that a bit.

drsaj -It is a cool idea, and if I already had the counter installed I'd give it a try, but since I'll have to order my countertop soon and it would be a lot cheaper to have them drill a hole for a countertop air switch now then after it was installed, I need to decide now.
