Apple Tree Trouble

I have a very young apple tree that is 2 1/2 feet tall. It really hasn't gotten any taller, but is sprouting new growth on the lower part of the trunk. Just recently, the leaves have begun to dry up and turn brown, almost like the leaves are dying off. Why hasn't the tree gotten any taller and why are my leaves dying off and is there anything I can do? Hope someone can help????

when was it planted????

except for brown leaves.. you havent given us much info about the tree

Two of my five do this (the yellow apples). They get a leaf fungus (small grey or black dots) then the leaves curl up and die. It does not look nice, but the trees are growing like weeds.

Do yours get spots on the leaves? Or are they just turning and falling?

What kind of apple tree is it?

We have an old 30-40 some odd year old tree. Unknown variety. Earlier Apple variety. Looking at it a couple days ago there is one branch that has entirely different Apple than the rest of the tree. It has not been grafted previous to this year. First phot is the abnormal Apple It's a different shape and size, a different color (more yellow green than blue green) and it's shiny like a polished Macintosh where the other limbs have a waxy bloom. There's only one Apple like it because I cut the tree way back this year. So if it is a mutation and if I like this Apple, will the mutation be on the whole branch or just that spur? I've basically cut most of the main limb off to graft to this year via bark/rhind graft) and left a couple nurse branches and this mystery apple is on one of those branches. Branch is about 2-3" thick. Main limb is about 6-8" thick. I'll document size and shape with photos and dates and watch to see if it changes color. I'll have to taste it at some point too but will take photos of top bottom insides and seeds. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Once again zero apples this year, I have trouble with codling moth, this infests every apple. I tried spraying with Capt. Jack but does not seem to be working. These are Gala apple trees. The first five years these trees had hundreds of apples, now all is lost to the moth larva. Apples fall off in droves. I am having so much problems with these trees I am about ready to chop them down.

Honestly, you might be better just pulling it out and planting a known apple. Who knows what rootstock you have, could range from a super dwarf m26 (unlikley) that will never get taller than 7' up to a seedling rootstock (unlikley) that will be 40'+. And the apples are probably some commercial variety that needs a ton of spraying to stay healthy and provide any fruit. Instead get a rootstock that will do well in your climate, with your disease pressure and that will be a size you will be happy with. Then make sure your apples are a disease resistant variety. Make sure that the 2 will flower at close to the same time (less important if you have flowering crabs in your area) because apples need another variety to cross polinate. It is also nice to have 2 different ripening times so you are not overloaded with apples at one time then get nothing for the rest of the season. Early apples such as Pristine, Redfree, Williams pride. Mid season like Crimson Crisp, Liberty, Macfree, ect. Late season like Enterprise, Goldrush, ect. Although you are in zone 8 so warmer climate guys could probably direct you to better apples for you (i'm in zone 4). Since it is just going to be 2 trees and in your backyard read about ''bagging'' apples. Can work well for spray free fruit. Good luck!

Planted 2 years ago, from seed. Don't know what kind because daugther started it from one of her apples, so more then likely a crab. Yes the leaves did have spots and kind of light green in color (leaf), but now it went from that to now drying up but not falling off. The tree looked really good in the spring and I made sure that it was getting watered when there wasn't rain for long periods.

It sounds like it could be rust or one of the other diseases that trees in the apple family are prone to. There are some resistant cultivars and hybrids out there that are better to plant than from seed for this very reason.

Is there anything I could do to save it, or is it a lost cause? I do have fungial spray, is it too late for the spray. I want to see how it goes next spring, before ridding of it.

Don't rule out fireblight. Look at some pictures on the internet and see if fireblight could be the issue. My crab had it bad this spring. It causes sudden brown/crispy leaves to form on some of the shoots, almost like the twig got caught in a fire.

My crab also had scab so the two often co-exist.

With flireblight, the leaves cling.
With apple scab, they get spots, brown & drop.
Any chance of posting pictures?

I will post pictures when I get home. Thanks for all the help. With flirebright and apple scab, is there a chance to save the tree if it is one of those?
