Secret Garden Musk In The Heat and Humidity, How's Yours?

Often times roses that do exceptionally well in other areas of the country just do not like it here in my black spot infested corner of the world. I bought a band of SGN from Sequoia last spring. She took off growing and was big enough to plant in the garden by fall. I placed her on a 10 ft re-bar obelisk near a 4 ft fence. By spring she was peeking over the 4 ft fence and she now has two huge basals that are approx. 6-7 ft up the obelisk. So far,she's had a few clusters of blooms that were beautiful and fragrant but I think she's busy growing instead of blooming right now. Some black spot but nothing terrible and mostly the foliage is clean and seems to be unaffected by the PM that has been so rampant here this year. So far, I really like this rose! I was just wondering how she was doing in other people's gardens in the hot, humid zones and if their experiences and impressions of this rose were the same as mine. She'll probably defoliate tomorrow since I posted this :-)

I have heard that the Sequoia Noisette is really the SGMusk Climber. It will be interesting to see how the rose acclimates to a hotter and more humid climate. Here in Southern California, the rose is a twelve month bloomer thoughout the year. JimD

Jim, yes this is the SGMusk Climber. I think it was a mistake on the website? I called Carolyn and verified this before ordering. I was anxious to see how it would do in these conditions, as well! I've dug up many a rose that is "disease resistant" in other areas. The other thing I found interesting, here, is that this rose is supposed to be very finicky about being transplanted or potted up and I potted her up as soon as I received the band and then planted her in the fall and she never missed a beat.

I don't have long personal experience with roses, so it's not easy for me to say what constitutes "average" or above/below that rate of thorns. I do have Prosperity, though, and I'm guessing that it has average rates of thorns--nothing I'd personally want to have to walk next to as the plant gets larger and more difficult to give a wide berth to. Ours is still in the pot right now, and its thorns are going to be a strong consideration in placing its planting spot in the yard. But there might well be a lower-thorns cultivar of Prosperity somewhere that's different from mine. One thing I've found is that for old roses, it's quite easy to find plants that are distinctly different in terms of things like fragrance and thorns, depending on which nursery you buy it from. While most Cornelias in Europe and Australia are evidently very low in thorns and you can find that description in rose books, you have to do some looking and checking to make sure of getting a low-thorned Cornelia cultivar here. (Guess how I know that?) Climbing Iceberg might be a contender for your spot. There are apparently multiple cultivars of this one available, some of which are thornless or very low in thorns, but plenty that aren't too. (And the same thing holds true for fragrance.) But several people in this country have posted that their version is nearly thornless, so that cultivar is likely available somewhere here, if you spend some time checking on it with potential nursery choices for buying it. Thanks for posting the additional pictures. That is going to be beautiful. I remember the one of just the arbor, and that was stunning, found the thread, scroll halfway down, I guess it was the thread I started about the copper trellis. Somewhere else, you told us what you had on that arbor. If you don't mind, I'll just embed the photo (again), so people can see it. I am assuming you are expanding that area with your gazebo, please correct me is I misunderstood. On that thread you had asked me what I was going to use to replace the cheap temporary trellis for Veilchenblau by my fireplace wall. linrose posted a photo of her triple lattice iron trellis she said she got from Plow and Hearth. They were out. Now looking for arbors, I stumbled across that trellis (must have gotten a new supply) and bought two (comes in 30" widths), it's on its way. Am thrilled, but I'm going to have to wire them together somehow. $49+ for each section plus $12.95 shipping, not bad, I just loved it. lilyfinch -- I'm glad I was able to help! If I can offer another suggestion, consider a Type-3 Clematis with dark flowers to grow into 'Renae' as it matures and is trained onto the pergola. The Type-3s are normally pruned hard each Spring and bloom on new wood, allowing you to prune and train 'Renae' without worrying about maintaining any particular rose cane as a "trellis" for Clematis stems which must remain from year to year. Typically, the Type-3s start blooming after the main rose flush, continuing until late Summer. You'll have some overlap of bloom between the two (I don't know how much 'Renae' blooms during July/August). Two Clematis that come to mind as possible companions are 'Gypsy Queen' and 'Negritjanka' -- I think they'd look stunning against 'Renae' and the pergola if you intend to paint it white (I think you mentioned that...). There are plenty of others in the purple range which aren't quite as dark but will also look really good. If you haven't already done so, look through Brushwood Nursery's website -- and check the box to show "out of stock items" to see their full inventory. "Secret Garden Musk Climber" is relatively new for me. I first received it as a band in Spring 2013, but last year's horrid Winter was too much for such a young and only moderately cold-hardy (in NJ) rose. So this Spring I purchased it again, this time as a gallon plant. It has a few canes substantially more mature than what the first one achieved, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it makes it through this Winter. I have mine planted in a bed with limbed-up arbor vitae, in a bit of a tight spot but which gets plenty of sun. I know it will eventually spread wide as well as tall, and I already have one cane weaved into an arborvitae. I'm hoping that this provides a little extra protection as well as support -- and I look forward to seeing its white blooms poking through the evergreens. It's not overly thorny, but those it has are substantial -- large and hooked, perfect for snagging itself onto a support. From what I've read here, 'Mme Alfred Carriere' can get rather large -- and I mean tree-climbing large. True, this might not be the case where you are, but I'd still consider carefully if you want it on your pergola. If you are able to train it against your house, that might be a better spot -- if you don't mind it reaching the second story. I was actually considering it for the Japanese maple in front of my house after my 'Jaune Desprez' didn't survive last Winter. Instead, I decided to use the 'Baltimore Belle' I already had instead of ordering another Tea-Noisette which might not be able to handle Winter here in such an exposed location. :-) ~Christopher Here is a link that might be useful: Brushwood Nursery

It appears that our climates are similar...I put in SGMC last spring (2006)...from RU...no transplant shock issues either. Mine is taking its time to put on new growth...no big basal canes yet. I've got mine on rebar..it's about 4-5ft tall so far...a bit spindly and holding most of its leaves in a no spray BS paradise. But, mine has been sending out flowers...the JBs love them immensely. I've got faith in this rose...I think it's gonna take a bit of time to get established, then it's gonna take off...sorta like Darlow's Enigma did for me...I love the fragrance on this rose. I've got it paired with SDLM cl..to cover an arch...that opens to my secret garden...
I'm finding I really seem to prefer the single flowered roses lately.

DEfoliates here from BS, but blooms are very nice and fragrant. I will give it some time to build resistnce. Hopefully it will get better.

Hi Carol,
I grow mine in a really large pot, that I will one day move. It is wonderful and fragrant. Made it through the winter with no issues, it blooms in frequent flushes til frost/Winter. Occasionally has imperfect leaves. Seems resistant to disease, but this has been a dry couple of years for us. It might have a touch of PM in early Spring, or a touch of BS here and there, but it shakes it off quickly when it heats up (PM),and reflushes- if that makes sense? I have no problems or complaints. It does seem slow to build up, but that is probably due to the growing conditions I have placed it in.
Overall, LOVE IT!!!

Robert, I think that you and Olga have very similar black spot pressure to what we see here and that your climate is much like mine so I always appreciate hearing how a rose that we both grow fares in your garden. I think that mine will bloom more once this growth spurt is over. I couldn't believe how fast those new basals jumped up there. Mine had been spindly, as well, until these new basals appeared. Your arch sounds wonderful. I can't wait to see photo's. I didn't used to like single petaled roses at all and I find myself liking them more now. Funny how your taste in roses changes and evolves over time!

Olga, we have had little rain this year and the dry conditions seem to have inhibited the BS somewhat. Still here but not as rampant. Have you had much rain in your area? I feared that the lack of significant BS I had seen on this rose was due to the dry conditions and that I wasn't getting a clear picture of the disease resistance. Thank you for the information. I will be interested to hear how yours does with a little maturity. I try to give my roses a fair chance and a bit of time before yanking them. She is a beauty and I love the fragrance.

Hi Jenn, I can stand a little imperfection but I do like some leaves with my roses! I really like this rose and hope she is going to like it in my garden. Sounds promising that she is doing well in yours. How is she doing in that pot? Do you have her climbing on something?

Carol, on the sidebar of single roses...so far I'm really impressed with David Austin's The Alexandra Rose...so far it's very healthy and a bloom machine...it's from Pickering on multiflora

Robert, I looked it up on HMF and it is indeed a pretty rose. Most Austins are not particularly healthy here, but there are a few that do well. It's interesting to hear that she is healthy for you. How big does she get? Is there much fragrance?

Carol- can you share what roses are healthy for you? Our climates are similar and I am planning on getting a couple more roses come fall (or maybe sooner- Vintage is having a sale til the end of July- 10.50 ea. for bands- do you think they are too far away?). I am partial to true red, and orange or orange/blend roses. Thanks, Brandy

I want to caution you that I just put this rose in the ground this spring...so far it's about 2ft tall x 3ft wide...it's been pumping out the blookms like a Knockout rose for me...I don't notice a fragrance...
