Help..I don't know what to do with my gold fish plant.
Comments (44)Hi, Birdie. How long has it been since your last repot? One of the symptoms of tight roots is shedding of lower and interior foliage. If the internodes (distance between the leaves) are growing shorter, your plant needs a repot, but winter and early spring are poor times to consider repotting - especially for plants that are stressed and very low on energy reserves. Root congestion can promote blooming in some plants, but root congestion IS a stress, and as such limits growth and vitality to a degree that varies with the amount of congestion. I think the wise thing to do would be to get your plant healthy again, and THEN worry about blooming. Sound reasonable? When did you last fertilize? Often, plants starved for nutrients, particularly nitrogen, shed foliage after 'harvesting' mobile nutrients from older leaves so new leaves can grow. Culturally, you can treat your plant like most succulents. Letting it dry down completely IS a stress, so try to time it so you're watering just before soil is completely dry. Humidity is no problem for this plant. It's glossy leaves are very high in cuticular wax, which helps guard against low indoor humidity. I'm sorry, but I disagree that a fertilizer with a high middle number is a good choice for any containerized plant. There are no plants that use more P (the middle number) than either N or K (first and last numbers). The excess P adds unnecessarily to the level of salts in the soil and can actually contribute to leaf loss and deficiencies of other nutrients ...... particularly iron and manganese. That may be more information than you need, but others too, may be curious as to why high P fertilizers are not such a good choice for container plants. Best luck - let me know if there are any other questions you think I might help you with. Al...See MoreNot fading yellow rose
Comments (27)hi! I love yellow roses so I have most of what is on here, or have at least considered it. Throw out Radiant Perfume, it does not repeat well at all. Julia does fade, love it though. Midas is a wonderful non fading yellow and fragrant. Try this one. St patrick is great and great form but a light scent. Shockwave has none to mild fragrance and although the pic above is awesome, some of the pics have a red hue on the fully open flower edges Hotel california has a mild fragrance according to HMF. Golden Celebration is a climber here, love it I also have 2 yellow climbers Golden Showers (wonderful despite the name), and Scent from above (finally coming into its own in the 3rd year) In addition I have buccaneer but that is difficult to find....See MoreI don't 'do' yellows, but.....
Comments (12)Ok folks, I'm pretty much sold on Reve d'Or thanks to your rave reviews (thanks Ingrid and Buford). Case closed! Thanks again :) Buford, I've seen some pics of your garden - it's just wonderful, very much what I'm going for. So I think if the colours of Reve d'Or work for you, there's some hope that they'll work for me too. Thanks Jay for the great suggestions - I do hope your Adam perks up for you a bit. Some of the roses you listed are not available here, but they do look lovely - especially Clytemnestra. A lot of my neighbours grow Crepuscule very successfully (the big hedge of it just around the corner was what persuaded me to try growing roses in the first place), but it is a fairly bright apricot colour here, especially in autumn. Perhaps I would be able to grow Adam too, in that case, but I'll think of a less obvious spot for him, incase he bombs out like yours. Sidos House - Phyllis Bide has caught my attention on several occasions, but I have a few rosey friends who grow her, and she has a few drawbacks - namely, she doesn't repeat much at all, she's a thorny beast, and is not exactly a mannerly grower, from what I'm told. I have actually been lusting after Ghislaine de Feligonde a bit (I know, I said I don't do yellows...) and she reminds me of Phyllis to a degree. I saw you have a nice little GdF next to a particularly lovely garden bench. What is she like for you?...See MoreDon't you wish Kordes had a retail website like Austin does?
Comments (45)jjpeace, and anyone interested my first 3 Pomponella from Palatine where huge for my zone also. Buy the 3rd year many thick canes would reach over the top of my head ( 5'5" ) then fountain out making her anywhere from 8 to 12 feet across. The grafts eventually rotted out. She had gone own root so I was able to save a good hunk of her own root and replanted else where. She's making a come back as an own root. I also planted a new one from Palatine just in case. hcarnevale, I really miss those beautiful blooms. Yours is gorgeous. Bonnie I don't think I've ever seen a warm zone photo of Pomponella but I have visions of a disappearing home....See Moreorganicgardendreams
