Breeders whose roses don't do well for you
Comments (19)Wow, it must be hard to make rose decisions in a place where it's hard for a rose to die, Suzy. Sometimes i'm secretly glad when a rose that really doesn't thrive in my yard has the good grace to die over the winter, so I don't have to be a rose murderer. As for the rate of failure, it's definitely a product of being a zone pusher and wanting to try something different. Plenty of people in my zone have never lost a rose because they're smart enough to only plant roses suited for their climate- imagine that! I'm more like Ingrid, in sandandsun's timely quote, that I prefer to look at winter survival as a challenge rather than the roses of a particular type (or breeder) having a specific death wish in my garden. You're all absolutely right that knowing the breeder isn't enough to judge health, survival, or any other qualities in your yard. I absolutely do the kind of trial and error experimentation that Lyn was talking about in my own yard, it's just that I haven't really come up with particular patterns for what thrives in my yard, except for the obvious ones like "lavenders and russets are usually weak" (understatement of the year) or "roses with teas in their heritage are a long shot". Rick, I admire you for checking the breeding history of the roses, and it certainly would be a more logical approach with fewer failures. I'm afraid I don't follow the breeding history or even keep track of which parents do well for me, though I have noticed that climbers with New Dawn as a parent are likely to be a good match for my yard. Wow, Nastarana, I hadn't been familiar with Jacobus as a breeder but I looked up Dream Girl, and - wowza zowie is she ever! I love those fat blooms with swirled packed petals, and it's great to hear it thrives in zone 5. Might be a nice counterpart to Nahema on my fence. You ought to share your observations with Helpmefind, since there was very limited personal information on this rose. Where did you get yours? Cynthia...See MoreWow! Comments (35)Some commercial growers of European roses import budwood, not bare root roses. The danger of soil borne pests are thus greatly reduced. The growers also comply with import restrictions. If you read some of the rose books from the very early 1900s that are available on google books now, you'll see that the number of roses imported was tiny, compared to the massed production of today. The early American Rose Annuals have some numbers. Other importers keep the roses in strict quaranteen as must individuals who import. If a rose supplier were to buy bare root roses from other producers for immediate resale (which might explain why some roses are sent out in fall, others in spring) there is no way in heck that the rose supplier would know if the roses they are reselling are true to name or not. They would be dependent on the care taken by the original grower as well as tag loss/loosening in transport. I do know that for at least five years the Cressidas sold by Hortico weren't Cressidas but included at least two other roses....See MoreNow, you're done-what do you wish you had known while planning?
Comments (68)My opinion on pot fillers. If the pot is too heavy to carry to the stove when the water is cold, I sure don't want to carry it to the sink when the water is boiling. For the effort/cost I don't need one. YMMV, though. I wish I had run my layout by gardenweb members for feedback. I wish I would have thought about a pull out cutting board. I haven't had one for about 30 years and had adapted. Would really like to have one again. The matt white Formica shows every speck of everything! Good, because I can wipe it off right away. Bad because if I haven't wiped it off right away everyone can see it. I live on a gravel road. I rarely use my a/c. Windows are open all the time. The FX stuff I originally planned might have been a better choice. Maybe next time. I do like the look of the white, though. I really hate my upper diagonals but I also hate the blind corner cabs. The more complicated pull down/out doesn't appeal to me. Problem still not solved. I don't like what I have but I don't like the other choices. I thought and thought about this and only came up with the three "I wishes", so all in all, my kitchen turned out pretty good. I am more than delighted to have the peninsula gone and every time I think about my new kitchen I suspect my face has the orgasm expression....See MoreI have 20 new roses coming for spring! Comments (34)Suzanne I have three off your DA list, all were planted last year. I can’t help but call her Dezzi, I have two, and absolutely love her. She blooms her head off and is super healthy in my garden. Across the path from Dezzi is QoS. Mild myrrh fragrance, narrow, but taller than I was expecting. Very disease resistant for me. This year I’m moving her to the back, and putting Bliss at her feet. The Poet’s Wife. Love, love, LOVE her! She stayed in the 3gal pot I bought her in all season, and surpassed my expectations. Big exceptionally fragrant blooms that remind me of fruit cups I used to get in my lunch box as a kid. I ordered two of her so I’ll have three for my mailbox garden. She does get some lighter colored blooms, I’m not sure if that will change once she is in the ground, but also very disease resistant for me. I don’t spray. I almost got Savannah too this year, and I hope South Africa turns out good. This will be my first year with a few Kordes, I mostly have Austins atm....See MoreJasminerose, California, USDA 9b/Sunset 18
