Comments (32)Here's a photo of one side of the bush I snapped a few min. ago lol. There's more buds on the other side too. I got some more bare roots from the Breck's sale after I got the Austins from Wayside ,that came w white leaves and looked kinda like they broke dormacy in cold storage. Wow, most of them have buds as well (Twilight Zone, Julia Child, Pretty Lady, Sheilas Perfume all have buds!!). I put a little composted bunny manure in my water when I presoaked them before planting. I think that must have gave them a little jump or something because even the ones with white growth greened right up. That, and we got some rain from that tropical storm last week. Here's Olivia....See MoreFor all of you looking for Kordes roses etc.
Comments (18)My pleasure :-) I really hope some of you can benefit from it. SoFL, I think that they might possibly just do mail order as they do it over here. Beth, yes; Alleluia is very special for me too - it was one of my very first roses along with Memoire, Blue Moon, Black Pearl and Winter Magic. Modestgoddess, Purple Lodge is lovely! It grows on the road to Ludwig's nursery close to my home and is almost a blackish purple at times. I have stopped my car more than once to admire it. Diane, keeping my fingers crossed. I must say I secretly hope he will be able to bring some of your American beauties "home" as well - Annie Laurie McDowell immediately comes to mind, as does a few others....See MoreHas Kordes come out with any new roses this year?
Comments (24)Ben, I got Lone Star from Chamblees when Mark had his sale area. $5 it was! It is planted in my garden cottage area and is in a prime spot. I have been very pleased with it - its grown well, shrubby and covers itself in pale yellow blooms. It blackspots about like everything else but its very healthy and I like it alot. I sure miss Chamblees sale area! Mark would put stuff from other hybridizers there that were treasures. I still have an unknown apricot climber from some unknown hybridizer with no name that I love....See MoreThe House of Meilland develops better roses than the House of Austin
Comments (71)Austinkisses, I have had a bunch of roses that got RRD over time, and I had to get rid of most of them. I have, however, had 3 survivors. These 3 plants have not shown any symptoms for several years now. I did cut out the affected parts and continue to use my spray mix as normal. The three varieties that appear to be survivors or are at least asymptomatic are Blythe Spirit (Austin's), Pat Austin, and White Lightnin', the grandiflora. I had another one that put up a valiant fight, General Cavaignac, but ultimately it lost out. I gave it the regular spray treatments and cut out the bad parts, and for a while it seemed to be doing okay, but eventually the rosette would reappear. This went on for a few years. It always seemed to be worse in years when we had a bad, late freeze which would knock out the disease resistance. I finally had to get rid of it which was a shame. I have a second plant of it, but it is in a part of the yard that isn't as good. I hated to lose that rose even though it was a blackspot magnet because it did bloom quite a bit when it got going and repeated well. So, I am not sure what I can or cannot claim except that using the harpin and aspirin appeared to help some, but not most. It does help general disease resistance if the plants do not get clobbered by these late winter-spring transition freezes where the plants are trying to grow. All I can do is report what I did and what I saw as the results....See Moresuzanne_in_virginia 7b
