Burpee seeds, on rack have more seeds than catalog packets.
Comments (10)Stage rat. you have to understand the mindset of these engineers, with genius IQ's in math. They are perfectionist's to boot. enough that, sometimes, it can drive you crazy. He'll count just about anything in a seed packet, but even he draws the line when he hit the package of lettuce seeds and opened the inner foil packet and saw way to many seeds for even his patience. I quietly sat there, grinning to myself and thinking "finally a seed packet that you refuse to play with and count." Karen, I'm the one that has been posting the numbers in the seed packets in the burpee seeds on the rack. Been doing it for a couple of years now. K-mart has the seeds in the stores in MA now. I do miss the Martha Stewart seeds they carried when they had a contract with her. She had quite a few seed packets that others didn't have. Can't seem to find a store that carries them now. Comments (8)It seems owner George Ball still hasn't learned we don't need to pay for pretty and expensive pictures, costs merged into his prices, we'd rather have hard accurate information, good prices and good germination rates. I don't buy from him either, not plants or seeds - I haven't ordered from Cook's Garden either since he bought it. I'd better not even start on what he's done with Heronswood/Burpeewood, it is still the holiday season :) Playintheyard, don't treat all text you find in those catalogs as gospel, not all the information is reliably accurate - use them for ideas but check hardiness etc other places too for those things you are interested in....See MoreBurpee Discount!
Comments (6)ThatÂs interesting, Bonnie. The only thing IÂve gotten from them in recent years (besides their catalog to look at it!), was fall bulbs a couple months ago, and I got them Âcause they were having a 40% off (online) sale and then an additional $5 off the order when I waited until they thought I wasnÂt gonna order anything. So that was a pretty good deal, and I was happy with the bulbs. For the few veggies I order, I mostly use Pinetree because of their pricesÂsmall quantities, but more than enough seed for me, and then I use Harris because I can get a few specific varieties from themÂand pelleted carrot seed for Royal Chantenay. (A packet of the pelleted carrot seed is 700 seeds for $2.35ÂI think thatÂs reasonable.) I think Harris packet prices are very reasonable, but always more seed than I need. I havenÂt really looked at BurpeeÂs prices recentlyÂjust look at all the pretty pictures. I have noticed the cheap prices for Burpee and all the other in-store seeds, and I always figured they were just smaller packets (according to that thread, maybe thatÂs not true), but, for sure, when you get the 10 cent packets at WalgreenÂs, Ace, and other places, they have VERY few seeds in them. I buy them too when I can find something I want, and at 10 cents a pack, I just figure if I get 10 packs that IÂm getting as much as I might in one non-10 cent packÂand itÂs still a good deal. I donÂt really worry too much about the germination ratesÂIÂve never really had a problem with that, and since I mostly buy cheap seed, if I ever do, it wonÂt be any big loss. Flower seeds IÂm always FORCED to pick up some when IÂm walking by them in stores, but mostly the things I really want are the more unusual things and I get them from smaller catalogs whenever I notice something thatÂs cool. I still want to order some of the neat things Rocky Mountain Rare Seeds has, butÂhow much seed is too much seedÂand I think IÂm gonna handcuff my hands behind my back this year! I am glad somebody posted about that Seedman half-off sale, Âcause I was able to find some unusual things thereÂand for the half off price, it was a good deal. Since I can never throw seeds out, I still have seeds that are over 30 years old, and some day when IÂm retired and old and grey (IF that ever happens!), IÂm gonna get them all out and make a collage and frame it and hang it on the wall! Plan to get into action and post again on your winter sowing thread soon, Skybird P.S. I just got my Bountiful Gardens catalog. ItÂs printed on newsprint with very few (black and white) pictures, and they have all kinds of unusual thingsÂunusual to me at least! Anybody want to grow some Triticale? I wonder if they send Tribbles with the seed! (The BG catalog is put out by a non-profit organization called Ecology Action)...See MoreIs Burpee the only source for Brandy Boy seeds?
Comments (40)"i live 2 miles from burpee seed co. warminster pa..they closed their retail store a few years ago so i had to try all the local stores ,lowes HD etc. with no luck, i had to order online for $5 and $6 to ship 1 pack of seeds. 2 miles UNREAL!!!" $6 shipping minimum is a huge turn-off for a pack of seeds - you'd think a very sharp and personable guy like George Ball Jr. would have a better vision for his company. It's a no-brainer that this will hurt the long term reputation of the brand and viability of his company but they seem too engrossed in the accounting to realize that in their current form they need to cater to the small gardener, not fleece them, like Johnny's and Fedco and many seed companies working under the table, exploiting shipping at the expense of customer satisfaction. Since Burpee isn't staffed by garden volunteers, any expectation that they kept the store open was unrealistic. I'm sure they were sad to close their last brick and mortar store too. They still employ well over 100 Bucks County families, pay local taxes and are a boon to the economy. Can't expect Burpee to pay employees gross salaries of $15 - $20 per hour and act as corner storekeepers. Most everyone goes to Lowes and Home Depot first and then stops by mostly to pick up what they couldn't get on the cheap. Burpee can't be expected to compete with itself being sold in big box stores. Meanwhile the mainstream culture equates working in the dirt with second class employment, and Walmart tries to get rid of its greeters until they found out security guards cost more. ...And the young 'uns can't identify one fresh vegetable from another, people send saved seeds for free on the internet, and big box stores killed local specialty shops. LOL! PC...See Moreclumsygrdner
