Burpee seed catalog

I just got my Burpee and Cook's Garden catalogs and they sure are pretty. I have never ordered from either of them and won't but am glad I get them because they are great to look at. The prices are so high that if you order, you are paying for my free catalogs!

I am sure plenty of people 'buy pictures' or they couldn't afford to send out these fantastic publications.

I can't remember what company it was, but it was one of the big ones... I wanted to order a couple (2 or 3) packets of seed and they wanted to charge me $6.95 for shipping! Dang... What's up with THAT? I don't mind paying a few dollars for the seed, it's still so much cheaper than buying the plant, but I won't buy from a company who rips me off on shipping like that.

I do love the pictures though!

Burpee prices do seem significantly high and if i recall shipping is like 4 or 5 dollars shipping. I have had bad experiences with them and I personally think the prices are too high and extravangant(probably spelled that wrong:)) Pinetree garden seeds catalog has GREAT prices many as low as .95 for veggie seeds.Check it out! I hav ordered from them once before and had a great experience with them.

Stage rat. you have to understand the mindset of these engineers, with genius IQ's in math. They are perfectionist's to boot. enough that, sometimes, it can drive you crazy. He'll count just about anything in a seed packet, but even he draws the line when he hit the package of lettuce seeds and opened the inner foil packet and saw way to many seeds for even his patience. I quietly sat there, grinning to myself and thinking "finally a seed packet that you refuse to play with and count." Karen, I'm the one that has been posting the numbers in the seed packets in the burpee seeds on the rack. Been doing it for a couple of years now. K-mart has the seeds in the stores in MA now. I do miss the Martha Stewart seeds they carried when they had a contract with her. She had quite a few seed packets that others didn't have. Can't seem to find a store that carries them now. Fran

Love my lil' digger. The legendary SC clay is no match for this buckaroo. Have been using since last 3 years, belive me it is very easy to go overboard with this machine. Making perfect veggie beds, digging holes for planting trees, incorporating soil amendments have never been so easy. It's a pleasure to garden with mantis. Last weekend I had to install 150 feet of cement edging (using 18" scalloped pieces) around the flower beds. I marked the lines with chalk powder, and made perfect 4" wide and 4" deep grooves with mantis (using tines on one side only). The entire job was finished (including the cleanup) within 2 hrs, without breaking a sweat.

Funny, when I saw Annette's photo, I thought, "Looks like Cocco Bianco." Reading on, saw mention of White Coco. Growing this one and it is very prolific. Weston Seeds carry many Italian bean varieties. It must be hardy because there was a volunteer the next year which grew well and yielded quite a few dry beans. It was in the middle of the garden and I propped it up on a hoe handle. "Cocco Bianco - 65 days. Prized Italian variety is a popular little white bean with a thick pod found in traditional recipes, can be cooked fresh from the pod or dried. It is an old variety best known for its hardiness and for its high production of long cylindrical green pods. Weston Seeds 2013."

I have only received one catalog so far, bummer. I love the pictures and can go thru a catalog 20 times. I actually learn a lot from them.

OMG,I received my Burpee catalog a couple of days ago,i am so happy to know not all seeds are this expensive,what wonderful pictures though,i,too, am learniong a lot just from reading the catalog.

It seems owner George Ball still hasn't learned we don't need to pay for pretty and expensive pictures, costs merged into his prices, we'd rather have hard accurate information, good prices and good germination rates. I don't buy from him either, not plants or seeds - I haven't ordered from Cook's Garden either since he bought it. I'd better not even start on what he's done with Heronswood/Burpeewood, it is still the holiday season :)

Playintheyard, don't treat all text you find in those catalogs as gospel, not all the information is reliably accurate - use them for ideas but check hardiness etc other places too for those things you are interested in.

Like most of you I feel their prices are too high-both in the S&H and in the cost of the seeds.
However there are a few I will be on the look out for next year!
1. Petunia "Tie Dye"
2. Scabiosa "Summer Berries"
3. Viola "Amber Kiss"
4. Lavender "Lacy Frills" and "Provence Blue"

I think I'm almost done ordering anyway, one order each from value seed, select seed, and botanical interests. If I get no more catalogs in the mail I'll be fine!!LOL!!

I think you pay a lot for those pretty pictures. If you see something from Burpee that you must have and can't get elsewhere or substitute, buy 2 packages because they are also chintzy with the # of seeds you get!
