Hi, Skybird!

There was recently a thread on the WS Forum, that talked about the difference between Burpee's online prices vs. the packets you buy at the local stores. It was a real eye opener, particularly Littleonefb's response!

ThatÂs interesting, Bonnie. The only thing IÂve gotten from them in recent years (besides their catalog to look at it!), was fall bulbs a couple months ago, and I got them Âcause they were having a 40% off (online) sale and then an additional $5 off the order when I waited until they thought I wasnÂt gonna order anything. So that was a pretty good deal, and I was happy with the bulbs.

For the few veggies I order, I mostly use Pinetree because of their pricesÂsmall quantities, but more than enough seed for me, and then I use Harris because I can get a few specific varieties from themÂand pelleted carrot seed for Royal Chantenay. (A packet of the pelleted carrot seed is 700 seeds for $2.35ÂI think thatÂs reasonable.) I think HarrisÂ packet prices are very reasonable, but always more seed than I need. I havenÂt really looked at BurpeeÂs prices recentlyÂjust look at all the pretty pictures. I have noticed the cheap prices for Burpee and all the other in-store seeds, and I always figured they were just smaller packets (according to that thread, maybe thatÂs not true), but, for sure, when you get the 10 cent packets at WalgreenÂs, Ace, and other places, they have VERY few seeds in them. I buy them too when I can find something I want, and at 10 cents a pack, I just figure if I get 10 packs that IÂm getting as much as I might in one non-10 cent packÂand itÂs still a good deal. I donÂt really worry too much about the germination ratesÂIÂve never really had a problem with that, and since I mostly buy cheap seed, if I ever do, it wonÂt be any big loss.

Flower seeds IÂm always FORCED to pick up some when IÂm walking by them in stores, but mostly the things I really want are the more unusual things and I get them from smaller catalogs whenever I notice something thatÂs cool. I still want to order some of the neat things Rocky Mountain Rare Seeds has, butÂhow much seed is too much seedÂand I think IÂm gonna handcuff my hands behind my back this year! I am glad somebody posted about that Seedman half-off sale, Âcause I was able to find some unusual things thereÂand for the half off price, it was a good deal.

Since I can never throw seeds out, I still have seeds that are over 30 years old, and some day when IÂm retired and old and grey (IF that ever happens!), IÂm gonna get them all out and make a collage and frame it and hang it on the wall!

P.S. I just got my Bountiful Gardens catalog. ItÂs printed on newsprint with very few (black and white) pictures, and they have all kinds of unusual thingsÂunusual to me at least! Anybody want to grow some Triticale? I wonder if they send Tribbles with the seed! (The BG catalog is put out by a non-profit organization called Ecology Action)

I just called them and they are sending out more. but here's the thing: 1. My sowing is set back by 10 days by the time I get them. 2. More importantly, as I told the person in customer service, this cannot be an anamoly. If 2 packets of seeds ordered by me, is SO low, not a few, but less than half as advertised - this must be their practice. And they count on people not complaining. I've had this experience with so many seed companies, and somewhere here there is a thread, where I asked people to recommend seed companies. And I was too in a hurry to check it. I'm aware there are seed companies that are very honest, but the number of companies that think it is ok to label a package as 100 seeds, and enclose 30, is staggering. what if you bought an pound of sugar and found out it contained 1/2 pound? wouldn't you be angry? Apparently people do not complain when they are cheated by seed companies, perhaps bec. they feel the relatively small amount of $ is not worth it. Thanks for the info about finding the seeds locally. that would have been my first choice, but I couldn't find them.

In my area HD sells mostly Burpee, also ferry Morse, plus Ed Hume seeds. And some not so famous organic stuff. Burpee's concentration is on hybrids that is what makes their exclusivity. Heirlooms and OP are sold by so many marketers. Price wise, Burpee faces competition and have to cut prices to be able to stay on the supply-demand curve. I think great majority of people buy seeds from big box stores an they are the best vehicle for companies like Burpee to move the products. Their newer hybrids are usually sold a premium. If ordinary ones price 2 bucks the new ones are price like $3.50. Anyway. All I need just some Brandy Boy hybrid. The rest of my picks are all heirloom/OP. There this small internet store called: sample seeds shop (dot com) . they maybe over 100 varieties and the price is $1.26 per pack, Shipping about 3 bucks for average order. They also have peppers, vegetables , herbs. Worth visiting their site. I would never buy anything from Burpees online at inflated prices, as a matter of principle. The next vender to avoid is Bonnie.

The only roses I see on sale are PEACH DRIFT, TRANQUILLITY and ABRAHAM DARBY. Their search for "roses" brings up anything with the word "rose" in it. They have some beautiful hellebores! But I wouldn't order from them. I don't trust Burpee anymore. We used to sell their seeds at the Ace Hardware store where I used to work. The seeds would have about a 25% germination rate, if that. Customers often said the plants either would not grow, or would grow and not flower or provide any fruit. Their squash are notorious for producing only male flowers. Sad...

A bit more on the supposed evils of Burpee, lambasted as "cultural vandals" for deceiving poor Dan Hinkley and running Heronswood into the ground. It turns out that after a few years, Burpee concluded the "experiment" wasn't working and offered to sell the place back to Hinkley and Robert Jones for less than half what they'd been paid for it ($5.5 million). They refused. Apparently they were no longer interested in running Heronswood, and an opportunity to preserve the jobs of its workers was lost (wonder if any of those employees ever shared in the $5.5 million bonanza). So I find it difficult to sympathize with either of the major parties to this mess. Burpee was hoping to cash in on the cachet Heronswood had with gardeners to boost their plant business. Hinkley and his partner got to cash in, which was their right, but it was never a realistic expectation that a specialty place like that appealing to a limited group of devotees could ever be "taken national" (if that stated goal of Hinkley's ever existed). Too bad it didn't work out (in its last years before the sale to Burpee I'd noticed that Heronswood's offerings for some perennials I coveted had been markedly scaled back, for instance its once-massive selection of asters. Skybird, I posted the deal on Seedman, but I ended up not ordering from there. So far this season I've ordered from Pinetree, Diane's, Specialty Perennials, Heirloom Acre Seeds, Valueseeds, Swallowtail, and a very small order with Jung's. And of course, there are all the trades I made too!

Certainly no seed shortage here!

I'm a little frustrated with Burpee's prices, also. But, something that almost bothers me more is the exclusiveness of the varieties they offer. I think it might be very easy to become exclusively, a Burpee gardener. I figure that's not going to work for me because #1 I don't have that much money and #2 I don't garden in a place similar to eastern Pennsylvania. If their selection is suitable for that location, it won't be suitable for where I live.

Hoooowwwever, Burpee's got my Honey Girl melon seed . . . I've got NO choice but to send in my small order this year as in every year over the last 5 or so.
