Fruit on Snow Fountain Weeping Cherry?

I'm excited about the Snow Fountain Weeping Cherry tree just purchased on clearance for $45! Its pretty good sized. I had to lay it down to transport it in my full-sized van. Everyone says they are Beautiful and all the pictures I've seen are Wonderful! I understand the flowers produce "small, sparse, black, inedible fruits." Does this mean the fruits are inedible by humans or will the birds not eat them either unless desperate? Its not a "deal-breaker" but I am curious if our bird buddies will like it too. Have any of you noticed birds eating the fruits on your weeping cherry trees? Thanx, Barbara

The cardinals strip the fruit from our 'Snow Fountain' the second they are ripe. No other birds get a chance!

Most of the stuff written in tree/garden books, etc., is written with humans in mind - if humans can't use it, it HAS no use. Birds, as shown by the above poster, love them.

Hi Ken, it's not planted there. It's currently in its pot and I took the picture on the walkway where it's sitting till I figure out if it's a Snow Fountain Cherry or a Double Weeping Cherry. If it's a Snow Fountain it will be planted about 6' from a walkway. If it's a Double Weeping Cherry it will be returned.

I love the weeping shape, so I definitely want to avoid the mushroom look at all costs! It's in a difficult place to cut a bed around (totally flat yard and it's near the corner of the house, so we'd have some drainage issues with cutting a bed there). We do have one in the front that is far off from the house I could do that with though. That one doesn't grow nearly as fast for some reason though (it gets a lot more sun, which I assume has something to do with it), so I don't have the same problem with the branches laying all over the ground with that one...(although I wish I did actually, as I want it to grow nice and big!) All in all, I'm glad to know that I can safely clip it when it needs to be clipped back. Just seems the thing keeps growing wider and longer branches, but the trunk stays short! Thanks for your advice - I do appreciate it!

Early flowering kinds of trees and shrubs may flower in fall because overwintering flower buds are mature already and then open prematurely, during the comparatively spring-like conditions of autumn. Otherwise, sometimes flowers will appear on new growth in summer on kinds that usually produce flowers from dormant buds carried through winter, to open in spring. This is common on saucer magnolias, and is not unheard of on at least a few kinds of Japanese flowering cherries also. Apparently 'Snofozam' is one of those.

Yes, Tricia, all the pictures I've seen are Gorgeous, especially Spring and Fall. We are putting in a semi-circle in the back yard just for the birds and this tree is the focal point. Or maybe this was my excuse to buy the tree. Anyway, I'm thrilled the birds will like it too. What makes the birds happy makes us happy. lol. We want to add some shrubs where the birds can find refuge and provide food for them too. We took with us the list provided by the Shrub forum when we went shopping locally and only found Cotoneaster. Can anyone suggest any good online sources? Best Wishes, Barbara.
