New Dawn is aggressive and thorny. Look at Zepherina and also some of the hybrid musks (ie, Bubble Bath) and noisettes (ie, Crepuscule). Thorns arent goodin traffica areas.

They both get big. Like catsrose said New Dawn is really thorny. I could be wrong but I think MAC might be difficult to train on a pillar. It produces lots of light but not very lax canes.

I agree that you don't want aggressive thorny roses in that area. Where do you live? Zepherine has disease problems here but may not in your area. Crepuscule would work.

Thank you! I am in zone 8b San Antonio Texas. The house faces South-west. I will take a look at crepuscle. I had originally wanted a very light pink or white rose as the foundation plants so that I could plant bright annuals throughout the season and they would'nt clash :D

It's a beauty -- really.

MAC is stiff enough to be self-supporting. Too stiff (IMHO) for the use you plan.
I'm also crazy over Reve d'Or -- but I don't know if it is as good in TX as it is in CA.

Look at something a big more mannerly. You don't need huge roses there. And you're committed to attaching something to the brick so you can train them?

Wow crepuscule is a beauty! Berndoodle...no I am not totally committed on having a climber there, I just thought it might look neat. I am definetly open to all other suggestions, climbers or not! I already have a MAC planted on one pillar so I will dig her up ASAP and move her to the side of my house where she can climb her little heart out :D Or is it really hard to train her to become a self supporting tree?

Please forgive these questions as this is my first year I have roses. So far in my little lot I have planted: Mutabilis, ballerina,( 2 )the fairys, belindas dream, ADAM, and duchesse de brabant, and MAC. I must say that the duchesse is doing the BEST so far (well the MAC runs a close second). I planted them all around the same time and the duchesse just is a non stop bloomer! And her foliage is perfect! Even in the heat and humidity, and I currently do not spray.
Speaking of sprays, does anyone have a particular one they can recommend to a total newbie? :) I wanna make sure I take good care of my babies :)

Another question on crepuscule: Does it actually climb well you does one have to provide alot of support for it to climb up?

Other than gigantic "tree-scramblers" you have to give "climbing" roses something to "climb" on.
And you have to tie them to it, more or less.

I wonder how Cl. Lady Hillingdon would do for you. Not nearly as aggressive and blooms a lot. With the color of your home I don't know whether pink would be a good color because it would blend in too much. Blush Noisette or some other noisette might also be something to consider.

Is anyone loving Nahema as much as I am so far? I think this might be a good candidate. It's more modern, but it seems to have OGR charm
