Don Juan prunning Help

I have two Don Juans growing on a arch, one on each side.

I have lots of color after about five feet up, and lots on the top. They have been in about five years, and I have not done much pruning. My question is if I prun them hard next spring will I get more shoots lower, so that my whole arch will be covered with roses? Any prunning help? Thanks

here are some great videos from ashdown roses these will help. Do not prune the main canes low only the side laterals. All will be explained in the videos.

If you have flowers starting five feet up, that's actually pretty good.

If you prune severely next spring, it will probably respond with 8' shoots from the base. You could try cutting a cane or two on each side back to 2' and see what happens. Tie the resulting lateral shoots over sideways.

Neil, I don't think you're talking about rust -- the fungal disease that attacks foliage. You're talking about a browning and failure to open of the blooms, yes? Is it possible for you to get a digital photo of the affected blooms??? Otherwise, we're sort of shooting in the dark. From what you've given us, I'd be inclined to guess that the problem may be BOTRYTIS. (See the website below). As to a yellow climber, I won't make a suggestion, as I am out here in the West. You need advice from your area. As a general rule, however, YELLOW roses are the roses most likely to be afflicted with blackspot disease -- and thus need spraying. Without seeing it, my best guess would be powdery mildew. If you are unfamiliar with it, and blackspot is your usual fungal disease, you likely won't see a lot of it -- but immature plants can mildew when stressed. No spray will eradicate it. Sprays are preventive, only. If you have sprayed, it may stop spreading. You can hide it some with an oil spray, but be very cautious. At 75 deg. you're getting up to where oil on leaves cooks them, and a temporary bout of mildew may be preferable to that. Jeri

I'm in zone 6b in Oklahoma. The only hybrid tea that has thrived for me over the last ten years is my Don Juan climber. He is stunning in April and May, goes dormant during our punishing summers, and has a smaller flush come September. I no longer grow hybrid teas in my climate except for him--he's wonderful--I've moved on to noisettes and others, which can stick out our brutal summers a bit better. Good luck.

I have a new Don Juan I bought at walmart a few days ago (I know bad, bad!) in a 3 gallon pot on a trellis. It was a good size for the price and full of little velvety buds. I tried to walk on by but the fragrance called out to me ...buy me buy me. I said," no Sir, I've heard about your reputation and I'm not that kind of girl!" Then proceeded to push my cart around to the other side of the table to see what else there was. Oh no! More Don Juan's on the other side with even more seductively red fragrant flowers. Geez, what's a girl to do when Don Juan is calling your name and then he jumped right into my cart? Well that's what I told my dh anyways. I put this guy into a 7.5 gallon for now. I am sure I will have to pot up to a larger size once I figure out where he will go permanently. Just make sure you have good drainage holes and work in some extra perlite and compost into your potting soil. The flowers are a darker red but my camera didn't capture it.

I wouldn't prune them further down. Instead how about planting a floribunda at the base of each side covering the naked lower canes?

You could go with a soft pink as a contasting color. Soft pink and red look great together. Or you could just put a red floribunda like Frankly Scarlett there. Just an idea for you to consider.

Thank-you for all the help. The video is very informative sunnishine, and michaelg I think I will try to tie some of the lateral shoots sideways. Newyorkita I like the Idea of a pink floribunda, I was thinking of a climatis, but the floribunda sounds like a better idea. Gotta love this website!
