Don Juan climber in pots?

I have a concrete deck 20'deep x 50' wide that is south facing. Half of the deck is roofed, so 10'x50' under roof, and the other 10'x50' open. I would like Don Juan to be placed next to the posts that supports the roof. Let it climb up the 8ft tall post then go horizontal along the eave.

In order for DJ climbers to reach full potential how big a bot would we need to be placed next to each post?

Peter, what zone or area do you live in? That can make a big difference on whether this will work or not. You can grow climbers in pots but the thing is eventually they will get root bound and need to be root pruned. I grew Blaze in a pot for about 5 years but I'm in a cold zone with a short growing season. In a warm climate with a longer growing season that rose might get root bound much quicker, like 2 or 3 years, and need to be root pruned.

If you are in a cold zone, Don Jaun won't work. If you live in a warm zone you will need at least a 25 gal. pot. With Don Jaun, root stock makes all the difference in the world. Fortuniana grafted, it turns into a huge bush covered in those silky red blooms. I know K&M Nursery and Nelsons FL Roses carries Don Jaun on fortuniana.

I don't think Don Juan is a climber that particularly likes the cold. Obviously Hrose and Seil are successful with theirs in zone 6, but in my zone 5 Don Juan is one that has failed to overwinter for me at least twice. It wasn't in a prime spot, but I'd be leery about it in the Chicago area unless you can give it a nice protected location. If climbers survive but need to be pruned to the ground each winter, you never really get a chance for the kind of blooming you want for a climber. In contrast, Dublin Bay has done consistently well for me and even survived with some cane over the winter. It's not the ridiculously hardy rose like Quadra or Ramblin Red or Illusion, but it has the more classic red rose shape and seems to survive well. Fields of the Wood is also a good survivor, and there's some speculation that this found rose is the same as another named survivor (either Rhode Island Red or Ramblin Red). Either way, I think there are probably some more reliable red climbers for zone 5 than Don Juan. Just my experience with this rose in Nebraska. Cynthia

Just stick it in the dirt. I have 2 cuttings I stuck in pots last year, I found they rooted easily with no special treatment other that watering them. They made it through the winter with no protection and getting very big and have been blooming all spring and summer just like thier mothers.

This is a known winter tender rose--it sounds like you either need a warmer spot, better winter protection, or another rose. Ideally, you want southern exposure, shielding from wind, and plenty of light--like I have between a wheelchair ramp and a bay window. You could also put tender roses next to a furnace chimney or asphalt driveway. I grow St Patrick near the driveway--it usually doesn't survive winters around here, but I've had it for years.

Well my Don Juan would be in its second year this spring. I do remember a few blooms from last year though. I was pleasantly surprised. The one thing I do hope is that it will be cane hardy in my zone. I guess I will find out despite a mild winter.

In your zone you will need the biggest pot you can find! Otherwise you'll be having to prune that rose down and repotting it all the time. In effect that will not allow it to really grow and fill that space. Isn't there any way it can be planted right into the ground?

I have a new Don Juan I bought at walmart a few days ago (I know bad, bad!) in a 3 gallon pot on a trellis. It was a good size for the price and full of little velvety buds. I tried to walk on by but the fragrance called out to me ...buy me buy me. I said," no Sir, I've heard about your reputation and I'm not that kind of girl!" Then proceeded to push my cart around to the other side of the table to see what else there was. Oh no! More Don Juan's on the other side with even more seductively red fragrant flowers. Geez, what's a girl to do when Don Juan is calling your name and then he jumped right into my cart? Well that's what I told my dh anyways.

I put this guy into a 7.5 gallon for now. I am sure I will have to pot up to a larger size once I figure out where he will go permanently. Just make sure you have good drainage holes and work in some extra perlite and compost into your potting soil. The flowers are a darker red but my camera didn't capture it.

Lol, sultry, you are a bad girl! But hey, we've all done it! It looks nice and healthy and the potted ones are usually better than the bagged ones so I'd say good for you!

Don Juan does pretty well in the heat, but the reflected heat off that patio in the summer will be an issue. Not sure what you can do to solve that.

Our Don Juan is every old and on Doc Huey, he does manage to reach 7 or 8 feet, but stops shortly after that. Maybe if he got more water he would grow more? or maybe not. He is in the ground, near the hose bib and under a lot of mulch.
