Don Juan Bloom Rust

I have a Don Juan that I have had for about 4 years. It has struggled with Black Spot. In 2007 this area was hit hard with an early warm spring weather for several days followed by 3 or 4 days of freezing weather that killed much of the immature growth. All plants struggled just to survive for the entire year. Last year the plant lived and bloomed, but not nearly as well as could be expected. This year the plant has really come back well with a lot of new growth and a lot of buds. However, as the buds open and the bloom starts to mature, it is developing a brown "rust" that eventually kills the bloom. Any help on the cause and cure would certainly be appreciated.

A second problem: I had a beautiful "New Dawn" climber on the same fence that suddenly died this spring. No evidence of Voles. I am looking for a good yellow climber to put in its place, preferably one that has been proven to be resistant to diseases. Any ideas?

Neil, I don't think you're talking about rust -- the fungal disease that attacks foliage.
You're talking about a browning and failure to open of the blooms, yes?

Is it possible for you to get a digital photo of the affected blooms??? Otherwise, we're sort of shooting in the dark.
From what you've given us, I'd be inclined to guess that the problem may be BOTRYTIS. (See the website below).

As to a yellow climber, I won't make a suggestion, as I am out here in the West.
You need advice from your area.
As a general rule, however, YELLOW roses are the roses most likely to be afflicted with blackspot disease -- and thus need spraying.

I've had the same problem with Don Juan here in Vermont for years now. The first couple of blossoms are huge and wonderful, with deep color and rich raspberry-rose scent, and each year as more buds swell I think it's going to be different - but they blacken and fail just as they are opening. Don't think I have any pictures of the sad process, since I tend to concentrate on the beautiful ones, but if it happens again I will take some for sure. Meanwhile i will check out the botrytis site. Thanks.

Although he's farther south than you, Palmetto near Tampa, my son has had Don Juan for more than 15 years. When I was there in late February it was blooming as it was in October of 2008 when I visited previously. He does very little to it, leaving it for me when I visit. He says it almost always has a bloom. I'd say for continuous bloom go for Don Juan. His is grafted on Fortuniana. In North Florida with your cooler winters it should do better. My daughter, in Gainesville, says her roses are leafed out all year long. There again, I clean them up when I visit.

I have this rose too but I'm not as happy with it as you are. Gorgeous fragrant flowers, yes. But for me it's not at all disease resistant. But that's to be expected given my location. I have the same issue with this as I do with regular Don Juan and some other roses. Great blooms, horrible looking canes and foliage. I wouldn't mind if it were covered in blooms, but it isn't. Not only is mine usually leafless (even with being sprayed) but the canes get grey and ugly looking. I am going to really prune it next spring and start over. Maybe it just needs to be refreshed.

I agree with Jean, gorgeous roses and photos. I love the color depth in both roses. Even placing those photos next to each other I like them. Gingersnap would look great next to yellow roses and it looks like you do have at least one in the background.

I am in a zone 9a It is a hot and humid in the summer but we get a few freezes in the winter. I have Don Juan in a 5 gallon pot right now. He is about 10ft tall and still growing. Lots of blooms all season. He has a nice fragrance too. You will like him :) ~SJN
