I Love my Cl. Pink Don Juan

I don't remember seeing anything about cl. Pink Don Juan on this forum, and just wanted to give this climber a "plug".

I bought 6 different climbers a few years ago to cover up a piece of cyclone fence - St. Josephs Coat (2), Blaze (not the improved version), America, Royal Gold and Pink Don Juan.

All are doing great, America and PDJ are my favorites. I've read plenty of raves about Cl. America, well deserved - the blooms are stunning and the climber vigorous and healthy.

But Pink Don Juan has been a total surprise after reading so many blah reviews about the original red cl. Don Juan. The blooms are large, very pretty and ooooo, so wonderfully fragrant. I've been cutting them to put in my work bouquets and they hold their own with my good cutting HT's. This is really it's first blooming year - last 2 years it's been establishing itself. But now, what a reward I'm getting. With the little extra plus of being completely disease/fungus resistent so far.

I have this rose too but I'm not as happy with it as you are. Gorgeous fragrant flowers, yes. But for me it's not at all disease resistant. But that's to be expected given my location.

I have the same issue with this as I do with regular Don Juan and some other roses. Great blooms, horrible looking canes and foliage. I wouldn't mind if it were covered in blooms, but it isn't. Not only is mine usually leafless (even with being sprayed) but the canes get grey and ugly looking.

I am going to really prune it next spring and start over. Maybe it just needs to be refreshed.

I have 5-6 Dons and love them, they need to be pruned back and the canes need to be set horizontally, tie them down and they put out laterals along the cane, and those laterals can then be tied horizontally... I have BS galore and plant shorter roses in front of the Dons to hide the bare knees.. I have Belinda's Dream in front and in front of BD I have some Pentas and smaller perennials... works for me, I wouldn't give up my Dons I love them....sally

Thank you for all the helpful replies! ..Great group! :) This spring has been the first time I have pruned them. I thought it might be best to wait so they could concentrate on building strong roots. The inside of the canes have a soft wood color. Not dark, but not light. One climber looks to be budding with verticals already which is a first! I've hardly had verticals the previous years. I will try scraping a bit of the cane to check for green. Thank you! I'll also google info on canker. I'll take all the info I can get. I really hope they can flourish here. I've been trying to be patient with them, it will be disappointed having invested solely on Don Juan's. Otherwise, I think I will give Quadra a try. --Susan, how tall does your Don Juan grow in zone 5? And how much do you cut back? -Angelica

How far in front of the trellis is your lovely, healthy Don Juan planted? I just planted a Cl. D.J. yesterday and not sure of proper spacing between it and trellis. Thanks for sharing, it's inspirational. Miss Mary

Cl Crimson Glory, Don Juan, or other? Id pls?

I seem to recall that Climbing Crimson Glory has weak stems and "hangs its head" -- not a disadvantage in a climbing rose, which is observed from below. The flowers are enormous and age to a deeper crimson. Old garden books used to rave about climbing Crimson Glory, deeming it better than the bush form. But one seldom sees it now. I don't think yours is it. Don Juan is very nice, too, however. It doesn't age to a darker, more purpley color like Crimson Glory, but keeps its ruby red. My husband adored our specimen of Don Juan, bought on a whim, but it succumbed to a particularly hard winter one year in our garden. Ah, Eden is a beauty, isn't she. Mine has 2 blooms open way up high on the pillar it wraps around, but given the number of buds, this should be a spectacular year for Eden--in my garden at least. Your pics have certainly whet my appetite! Kate

Ohh I love this one too! I planted mine this spring and it has given me probably 8-10 huge, gorgeous blooms like this one...can't wait to see what it does next year!

I love mine, too! I've only had it a year, but I really do love the blooms and the fragrance. So far, I haven't had any disease issues.
