Cl Crimson Glory, Don Juan, or other? Id pls?

This is growing in a public garden, and the tag seems to be long gone. Roses that are grown here include Cl Crimson Glory and Don Juan. Do you think it is either one of these?

It's difficult to say from what I see here, but it appears to be compatible with 'Don Juan,' as I've seen it here.
It's been a fairly popular rose here in our area, in the past, so we do see it.

It sure looks clean. Do they spray it, or is it just that blackspot resistant? (It seems to be clean here, too.)

I seem to recall that Climbing Crimson Glory has weak stems and "hangs its head" -- not a disadvantage in a climbing rose, which is observed from below. The flowers are enormous and age to a deeper crimson. Old garden books used to rave about climbing Crimson Glory, deeming it better than the bush form. But one seldom sees it now. I don't think yours is it.

Don Juan is very nice, too, however. It doesn't age to a darker, more purpley color like Crimson Glory, but keeps its ruby red. My husband adored our specimen of Don Juan, bought on a whim, but it succumbed to a particularly hard winter one year in our garden.

Can't speak to Chrysler Imperial, but I have Oklahoma and a couple of Mister Lincolns - those three are sort of the vintage trifecta of Hybrid Tea Reds. Veterans Honor I planted new this year (felt like I needed more reds). So far, it appears to be the best red I've ever seen. The bush is already about 5 feet tall from a bare root in spring. Flowers are huge with perfect exhibition form and no blushing/bluing at all. Of course, the only minus is no scent. If it had that, IMHO, it might be the best red, ever, period. Crimson Glory is a rose I'll never be without. It may have the finest fragrance of any hybrid tea in existence. Flowers are good size, with absolutely velvet substance. However, the bush and flower stems do not meet modern exhibition standards. Stems are very short, weak, and the flowers knod over on a regular basis. The bush is more old-rose style - it's rambling and perhaps wider than tall, growing very much like a hedge. However, that fragrance is unbeatable, strong, and consistent.

Thanks for all the responses, everybody! Organic tosca, I don't have Vintage's catalog, but I did look up some of their old newsletters and saw a great article on the hybrid musks. Thanks. Nastarana and Monarda, I love the looks of the ones you suggested, but I don't think the Prince or those HP's would do very well here as far as blackspot goes. I hope someone can tell me I'm wrong because they are very beautiful. Cardinal Hume sounds like it might stay healthy here and would be a good possibility. Maureen, the pictures I see of Quadra on the forum and on helpmefind really are something. One day in the not so distant future, I can see myself taking out my puny Don Juan and putting in Fields of the Woods or Quadra in it's place. Luxrosa, I've got Lamarque growing up an arbor, one on each side. I under-estimated how much it would affect that one side as it grew up. It's just doing too good of a job! I do seem to misjudge a lot of the time and I am lucky roses are so easy to move.

I, too, love Jacqueline's exuberant garden. I don't think my garden is big enough to accommodate most grasses, and anyway most would be too vigorous to plant near roses, probably. (I admire anyone who can tell grasses apart, though, especially the wild ones.) I do grow the Japanese golden grass (Hakonechloa macra 'AureolaÃ¢ÂÂ) in front of Rose de Rescht and also a miniature golden carex. One year I had a lot of self-seeded dull pink bleeding heart on that side of the garden and some very saturated-dark-red pansies (with a touch of brick red). I thought it turned out very well. Except that the bleeding hearts often finish up before the roses get going. I am now trying to re-do that bed. The grass, which took ages flourish, and even died and had to be replaced, now is too big and needs to be divided. I don't think it has flowered for me. But I saw some flowering in a container in Manhattan and it looked enchanting. I am going to try the Emilia Irish poet there, too. My garden faces north east and shaded by buildings, especially when the sun is low in fall and winter. In summer the hot morning sun blasts the mini-hostas and other shade-loving things I've tried, though. My miniscule front garden has similar issues. It's too sunny when it's sunny and too shady a few hours later when it's shady. Our urban weather tends to the extreme. As far as colors clashing. I was brought up to think "blue with green should never be seen", "orange clashes with pink" and so on. But it's a funny thing about how tastes in colors as in other things can change 180 degrees. I knew someone who worked for a well-known Institute of Taste and Smell, who said they were asked to do research to find a scent that manufacturers could use to put on toilet paper to make it more attractive. The trouble was that whatever they used, after three months people stopped liking it and started hating it. (For toilet paper, give me scentless, thanks.) With children and breakfast cereal it was the same thing. After three months, they got tired of the new shape or flavor, or name of cereal, whatever it was that the cereal companies were marketing. So we tend to get tired of whatever we liked sooner or later, but then, after a due interval, we may come back to it. So far, however, I haven't gotten tired of Rose de Rescht!

Oh boy. I get to write about my two favourite red roses. Dublin Bay is a proven winner. BUT it sometimes decides to stay as a 5 foot bush. Prune to encourage growth when young. Lots of flowers but to my nose the scent is not worth mentioning. Mine is growing in part shade in the morning and filtered sun in the afternoon. I have had three and never had a problem with disease Amadeus is another one that likes to stay as a bush. It grows as a climber but looks like a tall bush.. Again I can't get a reasonable fragrance from it. The flowers look like they are made of red bone china. Although this rose is classified as a climber, I get more blooms from it when grown as a tall bush. No disease problem. The red is not like the photo but is definitely a fire engine red. I haven't grown Crimson Glory but to me it should be bought from a nursery that knows the colour and the Damask fragrance which is strong. This is an old sport and so will need to be pruned or it can grow tall an lanky. Plus you get more blooms. It likes to be grown in rich soil or have lots of rose goodies plus water.

I don't know about Don Juan, but I have Cl Crimson Glory, and I agree that this rose it not it. Wrong color, and from the pics it looks like the blooms open almost flat, which CG does not.

I love love Cl. CG - it has deep dark velvety blooms, and a very strong "old rose" fragrance.

Shiny leaves? Light fragrance, colour that doesn't fade? Here Sympathie and Santana are very common, but there are other kordesi hybrids too.

My favorite climbing hybrid tea is Etoille de Hollande. It has behaved very well on a trellis and grows tall up to the first floor windows. The picture doesn't look like any of the older climbing hybrid teas I know. Hard to rule out the newer ones with shiny leaves.

While I do not remember the finer details well enough to confirm it, I used to grow the climber Don Juan, and this is consistent with my memory of it.

I second the opinion that it is not cl. "Crimson Glory" which -is truly a deep crimson
- has more petals
- and which does hang its head in a most fetching manner.

If you have the chance to check the fragrance it often helps with eliminating the famous climbing red HTs. They have the most fantastic fragrance, and very easy to identify. Other common climbers like Blaze, Sympathy, Crimson Shower are fragrant, but very different type of fragrance. There are a lot of red climbers, and many of them are still widely grown. It takes a bit of investigation and comparisons to make the correct identification.
