Had a great show season and a lot of fun!

It's rose show season this month in cold climate zones. There are two in my area. The Detroit Rose Society show was last weekend. I posted my result over on the Exhibiting forum but it's not a very frequented place. If you're interested I'll post a link to that show's results at the bottom.

This weekend was our Grosse Pointe/Metro Societies show. Metro lost their venue so they decided to join us and it really worked out well for everyone, I think. In past years they've both been on the same weekend. Fortunately ours is always on Friday and unfortunately theirs was on the next day, Saturday, so you could enter both but it made it a grueling weekend. Both groups had a good turn out of exhibitors and were well represented at the head table.

I tried my first Challenge Class too!

It didn't win but I was just excited that I had 3 pairs of minis all at once that I could enter! Never been able to do that before! Top to bottom, Lady Bren, Yantai, Snow Ruby.

My arrangement didn't do as well as last weeks. I got a second. But I switched up and clerked for arrangements instead of horticulture this year so I got to hear what the judges thought. Very interesting and I learned a lot!

They didn't think my arrangement was "modern" in design and the branches were too heavy.

It was a wonderful couple of weeks, I'm glad it's over, exhausted and have a ton of things to catch up on around here that seemed to slide while I was busy with roses, lol.

Overproduction and no control at all on releasing and selling bulbs under a "known" variety's name even if they were not. Take H. Red Lion as an example. Red blooming hippeastrums are being produced all over the world. Although from different clones, they are still marketed as "Red Lion". I think no one now can be guaranteed that the "Red Lion" you buy in Walmart would be from the very original Red Lion clone. This also holds true with the cases of Ludwig's Dazzler, Appleblossom and Orange Souvereign. I did a post here several years ago with pics of different pink flowering Hippies all sold under the name of "Appleblossom". I have a feeling that Exotica, Exotic Star and La Paz will soon be joining the bandwagon. What is going on inside the commercial nursery production/breeding lines we don't know. So much are not being written and told. Hidden secrets of the multi-billion $$$ trade.

Thank you Butterfly4u!! This will be my third spring/summer here. We finished construction and closed in Feb. 07. Yes it is fun, I'm having a blast with this and I am quite excited about what I have planned. I got the tilling done on both my large raised bed and my veggie garden yesterday. We got the timbers installed for the raised bed and I have 100 beautiful, healthy seedlings that came in yesterday. On vines, I'm still thinking. Folks have had some great ideas, and I'm really leaning toward using several different ones as I have 4 or so to put in. I hope to have all the seedlings in within a week or so, Unfortunately for this weekend, I've got a bad wisdom tooth that flared up last night is kicking me badly! This thing is hurting like you wouldn't believe!! So I'm pretty much out of commission till next week after I get the dentist to fix me up.

BLTs are one of those things, I can take 'em or leave 'em. I never found them to be overly satisfying. Nice snack, yes, something with something else, yes and when you do it, do it right. Lots of bacon! I have been eating a lot of grilled cheese with bacon sandwiches lately. Got a great deal on some fabulous bacon and haven't had grilled cheese for a long time. Tonight I had turkey & swiss on lightly buttered multigrain toast with some mac salad and cole slaw. Refreshing on this warm, humid day.

Thank you everyone! Yes, buford, I do keep my ribbons and certificates. We only have the one cup which is passed from year to year, we can't afford more, and I know a lot of people get to a point where they don't care about the awards, but I guess I'm not there yet, lol.

Congratulations! That Snow Ruby is beautiful. I'll have to keep on eye out for it. Your arrangement is lovely too. I won with my mini arrangement at our show yesterday. I was so thrilled. It was only the second time I'd entered an arrangement.

Thank you, Kate. It wasn't my first design. I let some of my friends and family see the first one and they didn't seem to like it so I changed it. Now I think I should have gone with my gut and used the first one. This is a pic of the test design. Don't look at the roses they were just spent ones I'd dead headed to use for placement.

Congratulations, Doll! Post a picture! I'd love to see it! My society has kind of a big reputation for it's arrangements so they kept bugging me to enter. I finally worked up the courage a couple of years ago and now I love it! Hort is fun but arrangements is so much more creative!

Kudos to you. I admire anyone that can go through the rigors that are demanded of an exhibitor. I like all of your roses. I've heard of Lady Bren but hadn't seen it before. It has not only a nice color, but a nice rounded form..... Any chance you know what the orange rose 3rd from the left is on the winners table? I love that soft dreamsicle orange....Congrats again...Maryl

Thanks, Maryl. Lady Bren is a nice one and I just got Chelsea Brittlyn this year. They're named for a mother and daughter rosarian team I know who are as lovely themselves. I'm not sure but I think that might have been Chihuly. If it is I can guarantee it isn't soft and dreamy! That is one HOT colored rose!

seil, your foliage is lovely. You're only using GreenCure with an occasional hit of Bayer Advanced Disease control?

Yes, Diane, I rotate between Green Cure and Serenade. And I always use the cure ratio recipe not the control recipe. I rarely resort to anything stronger and haven't done so this spring. I usually don't need to go that route until August when things get steamy around here and black spot is rampant. Because it was such a wet spring this year I have had some problems with powdery mildew on my roses. Mostly that's on the potted roses in the backyard though. Snow Ruby is up front in the bed and I rarely get mildew there and this rose is clean as a whistle!
