I always leave my roses in the pots I bought them in until I'm ready - sometimes it takes a month!

Definitely you have to keep them watered and also fertilize them with a liquid fertilizer mixed in your water once a week when you water (or a little in each watering).

Definitely they do better in the ground, but I think that uprooting them again is too stressful for the rose if you don't have to do it.

I'd move it into the ground or at least a larger pot. NO is a climber, and from one that I've seen it wants to grow rather fast. It will soon outgrow that nursery pot, if it isn't already root-bound.

Thanks folks. I believe what I will do is go ahead and plant it in the space where the bed will be and finish the bed as time allows. That way NO can get into a happy place while I finish my task of preparing that space. Diane this rose is definitely a fast grower, it is so tall and lovely already and has many new buds on it. Which leads to my question of what kind of structure this rose would like to grow on. DH and I discussed a small arbor, trells, bigger trellis, against a fence instead? Since this rose is so new I'm kind of at a loss for what it needs (structurally) to be happy.

We're growing Night Owl on a stand alone pillar. It's such a spectactular color we thought it should have its own little bed.

Time to revisit my thread if no one minds. A question about how tall Night Owl seems to get. I intend to move mine and and want to buy a pillar or obelisk for it (for next spring). HMF says 10 - 14'. Of course I know that with it being a new rose no one can really speak to mature sizes yet but how big of a support do you have yours on? Can we see a picture?

Mine did just okay this year. It is blooming now. I believe it may have ended up with too much heat and not enough love and I think if I take better care of it next year it will thank me with more blooms. Or so I'm hoping.

Kate -- Get a BIG pillar or obelisk.

My NightOwl, still in its 5-G pot, has evidentally "gotten its feet in the ground" and is expanding at an alarming rate -- while we dither and argue about where it is going.

I'm hearing that it can achieve the proportions of Sally Holmes.
My Sally Holmes started out on an 8-ft tall wooden tuteur, but has long ago abandoned that. It is close to 20 ft tall, and maybe 10 ft across.

N.O. has been completely disease-free here near the coast, and the blooms are everything I wanted. EYE say they are "purple," but DH calls it "that red rose." So perhaps it is the color of a very rich red wine, only much darker. It is tolerant of half-day sun in my conditions.

Big is good! I found a cool one for 8' like you said but now I'm wondering if that will get the job done. However we do have less kind weather than you do I expect. Winter can be pretty snowy and at times down to 10 degrees or colder. We definitely have some dieback every winter. So that might keep my NO more in check.

Kate, if your weather is that much harsher (WOW! You can grow once-bloomers and stuff!) you might well manage with that 8 ft. obelisk.

I should also mention tho that its canes seem fairly, um, stiffish. Upright. I'm thinking we could find a place to plant it, and just let it "fountain."

Yeah, we kind of push the Zone 7 concept at times. Other times winter can be pretty mild. It really varies. Since we are in the mountains really anything can happen weather wise:)

You make an excellent point about NO. Maybe it does not need support at all. Let me chew on that for a little while and thank you again.

FWIW, John Walden told me once that the most spectacular 'Fourth Of July' he'd ever seen was simply
planted in an open spot and allowed to grow like a fountain. I've always wanted to do that,
but with one thing and another have not.
But I think I might just do it with Night Owl. I have, as it happens, two good locations for it.

Could some of you post some pictures of your Night Owls? I'm sure at least some of us would like to see what the actual plants look like and how they are being grown.

An interesting perspective. Now you've really got me thinking. Because next year we are getting 'Canary Bird' from Hortico and I hear it has the same habit. Maybe CB and NO want to hang out together because they have the same habit? Not too sure on that as a color combo though..,

I know of no photos of a mature plant. Ours is not in bloom at present, but tomorrow I will take a shot of the plant, as it is, IN a 5-G.
DH is liking the idea of letting it fountain at the bottom of the hill, so that's where it may go.

I received "Night Owl" as a birthday gift from my dad this past June...I didn't know a thing about it but since Daddy gave it to me, I already loved it. It was only about a foot tall, potted and not yet blooming. I planted it at the base of an 8 foot arch, skeptical that it would grow much in its first summer before the frost stopped it. Here it is mid-Sept. and it is up to the TOP of the arch, has bloomed nonstop since early July, is completely free of any disease (has not been sprayed) and has totally captivated me. This rose grows UP, up and away! It gets TALL in a hurry! I don't have any shots of the entire arch with it on it (it shares space with other climbers but has surpassed them) but I have a few shots of the clusters.
I don't know anything about its hardiness so I think I will take the canes down for the winter & cover them....they are still very supple & green.
I love the deep purple of the blooms. They are even darker than my camera portrays. My flash makes purple seem more red, but believe me, these blooms are deep, dark PURPLE.

Jeri - I had two Fourth of July as big shrubs - accidently. A pine tree fell and took out their arch and after that they grew as shrubs. They were magnificant, show stoppers - about 8'. They were also the first roses to bloom in the spring and the last to quit.

I'm glad to see the info on Night Owl as I've not arranged any support for mine yet. I just got it, but its doubled in size in a month.

Well I decided to buy two eight foot pillars since they are on sale now and put them in the shed until next spring. If when I move Night Owl into the new bed next spring 8' is not enough I might just build a larger support or (darn!) have to go back shopping. Might grow Morning Glory on the other pillar.
