Carolina Silverbell vs. Eastern Redbud for NW Patio

Hi everyone,

IÂve been looking for a smallish tree with a canopy to shade a sitting area about 20 feet in circumference. The site is open to the north & west, sloping, well drained, and receives sun morning to noon during spring and summer. Summer afternoons, the site is in open shade from mature trees to the west. During the winter months, the site is largely shaded by a hedge of tall spruce to the south.

I see a couple trees at local nurseries that interest me. One is an Eastern Redbud ÂForest Pansy, the other is a Carolina Silverbell. I know that redbud grows well here  it is everywhere. I am not at all familiar with the Carolina Silverbell. I read that the CS prefers acid soil and is not tolerant of compacted soil either. The planting site has neutral clay soil. The setting is a patio and so the soil will get some foot traffic. Is CS out of the question?

Thank you for your replies.

Regards,
