Native black maple in VA??
Comments (10)besides the fact they seem to be natural & well outside the "official" native range is that they are growing on bottomland soil as far as I can tell, possibly even in the Potomac floodplain! Not where you expect a "hard" maple to be! ==>>> exactly who is this 'official' who takes the time to draw up maps of of mother earths preferences???? when one relies on a government bureaucrat.. for anything... they soon find.. the bureaucrat.. has no real clue with reality ... one might suggest that the 'official' range is perhaps.. COMPLETELY WRONG ... ???? where does one go from there??? now.. as for your excitement.. and new knowledge.. all the power to ya.. i hope you do burn the gas.. to go the 35 miles.. and get some pix while you are there.. to share with us .... i dont understand why you are hesitating about the decision at all ..... GO FOR IT ... ken ps: i had the same thoughts in regard to your other post on those un-named.. OFFICIALS... changing zone maps .... if you take nothing else from these two post.... it should be.. to ALWAYS question the OFFICIAL ......See MoreDo maples have "mast" years?
Comments (9)Hi Mayalena! It seems most trees to to seed intermittently, and this is true of the maples in my yard (as well as Oak, Linden, and Yellowwood). The big silver maple in the front yard goes to seed every year, it is an amazingly prolific tree, but one year it was so bad there was a 2 inch layer of wings in the gutters. The Sugar maple has only had 1 heavy seed year that I can recall in recent years, and I read somewhere they go to seed every 2-5 years. Norways also seem to be on an intermittent schedule. There are lots of seedlings this Spring, but it's been a few years since I've seen them. BUT - I'll never have to deal with that problem again - finally had the last huge Norway maple removed in March - yippee!...See MoreAcorn mast year?

Comments (7)They are oak galls. They are houses for certain developing insects, usually wasps. The insect injects a hormone into the plant that causes the gall to form around the larval insect. It takes 1 to 2 years for most gall insects to mature, and they usually "hatch" in the spring. Some galls can be up to 2 inches, and some infestations can weigh down branches. But, most of the time galls are hardly noticed. Galls are difficult to control because spraying must be done at the time adult insects are laying their eggs....See Morebengz6westmd
