I know what you mean. I had no concept of what size baptisia got, and I had good germination from seeds. This is the 4th year for the baptisia, & it is BIG. When the weather cools, I need to move 3 daylilies, a hibiscus, some camassia, & probably will find some other things I've been missing :) I may have planted the baptisia too close together, but they don't seem to be bothering each other, yet. They cover about a 4' square area, not at all what I anticipated, especially since they were so slow to take off. I've got a peony that I probably should move, but the blue baptisia with the pink peonies in bloom is so pretty together.
I'm going to finish pulling out some Early Sunrise Coreopsis. I like it because it blooms when not much else does, but it reseeds in the worst possible place.

Actually I dont plan on ripping any plants out right now. I have added lots of new beds/plants this year, so next year may be a different story : ) Plus I have a difficult area where some things might not make it through winter, we'll see what happens. I still plan on adding a few plants here and there, and just enjoying the garden. I wont be done til the snow flies.

We've expanded our perennial bed, so a couple of things will be dug up and/or relocated. My Rock Rose will be going to a better place where it can really spread out. The white guara will be relocated. I'm going to put out seed late this fall for some more appropriate sized perennials and see what happens next year!

I hate orange daylilies. But I have a lot of daylilies and they seem to be promiscuous. Tho I have never planted an orange daylily, every year a couple show up, the progeny of my pink or yellow daylilies. They're not the roadside ditch lily and some of them are *almost* pretty--sort of orange sherbet-y--but I do not want any orange in my garden so it means more removal of large clumps. Heavy work in the heat.

Well I can't rip out that rediculous Monarda because starting in 1999 i spent 5 years getting it out. So thats gone. Then I had to spend 3 years getting those stupid orange Ditch Lilies out which I thought were soooooooooooooooooo nice. WARNING DONT plant those ditch lilies in your favorite garden. This summer I've been trying to get that Lambs Ears out. It was purrrrrty for a while until it spread all over. SIGHHHHHHHH!!!!

Yesterday I ripped out a group of common sage that never really flowered this year. I was looking for a reason to get rid of it anyway. I planted a double knock out rose in it's place.

I planted some maroon grocery store mums last fall that went crazy & started blooming a week (or 2) ago. When the beetles lay off the red roses right behind the mums, they're gonna clash. The mums will probably get transplanted to another garden. In the meantime, it's nice to have some color that the beetles aren't destroying.

I have been culling Monarda and Solidago Fireworks. They have spread far and wide. I need to move a couple Sedum Autumn Joy. I need to thin out everything actually. Definitely need to divide Hosta 'Elegans' & plantaginea. Everything has grown so much. Need to thin out Daffodils too. The blooms were sparse this year. Wonder how I'll ever thin them out since they are so very deep in the ground. Sigh.............

My rampage started Monday evening. Ripped up/out and re-arranged about 20' of landscaping. Threw out some rose bushes and replaced with Fothergilla, got rid of some bergenia, re-arranged some ornamental grass, anemone, peonies. It looks better (neater) but I still just am not happy with the front of my house and probably won't be, I just don't think my house is very attractive (it's a long blindingly white rectangle - hard on the eyes).

Then I moved to the side of the house and ripped out a Nikko hydrangea that doesn't bloom and a hybrid perp. rose that is blackspotty and some pink veronica that looked dedraggled. Replaced the rose with a Knockout rose and the veronica with some anemone from the front, and this weekend I have to fill in the remaining empty space with some divisions/transplants - have the peony/mums/etc. from the front to transplant but not sure what's going to go there right now.

Tomorrow I'll probably get to work on one of the back beds, have to rip out lamb's ear that's spreading everywhere (again - man this stuff really fills in/spread fast!) and plant the sedum and coneflower I bought and re-arrange the bed.

I'm trying to decide if I can let all the hosta go just one more year without division. That is some serious work to divide those monsters. I may just close my eyes to it and hope for the best....

I have a Compass plant that I have been trying to get rid of since spring when I dug up a large chunk of it to give away to a more appropriate home, but it keeps coming right back up.
I wish I had a better place for it, but it just isn't fitting in my garden.
I also have a yarrow that insists on getting HUGE every year even though it's been divided each year since I've had it. I like it, just wish it didn't get SO big.
Another plant I might eventually have to get rid of is my Joe Pye weed. I just don't have a place that stays moist enough for it and even with regular waterings it gets droopy.

My problem is I just can't bring myself to just toss perfectly good plants. I try to pawn off as many as I can, but I know some need special conditions that some people can't or won't be able to provide.
So what do you all do with the plants that you no longer want in your gardens?

The phlox that gets powdery mildew every year is definitely slated for removal. I'm sick of thinning the clump and spraying every year. Sooner or later I get behind on the spraying and bam, powdery mildew seems to explode all over it! Yuck! Think I'll add a new peony or two and some more lilies.

I have lots of plans. In the beginning of the year I was really into the cottage gardening style. But lately I'm liking foliage rather than flower and a neater, less chaotic layout. Rudbekia will be coming out and hollyhocks for sure. The HH flowers are very pretty & even though I grew them from seed I guess I got the rust & they are one ugly plant. I may just cut those down. For the first time in my life I grew alot of things from seed & whole the flowers are pretty on most of them the foliage leaves alot to be desired. I'm probably going to remove half of whats currently planted & focus more on quality rather than quantity.

A couple of weeks ago I attacked the mass of Aster tartaricus that was starting to eat part of a border. The Phlox 'Natasha' was long gone, but I managed to save a Thalictrum & some conflowers. Now, I have an open space at the front corner, so I'd better decide what I want to go there. Normally, I get a plant & have to get rid of something to make room for it, or I decide something has to go & come up with a replacement b4 attacking. This year, I just got sick of looking at that mess of gigantic leaves & yanked. I still have quite a few Aster tartaricus left, but I need to be more vigilant about keeping them to the back.

I am chuckling to myself about the lamb's ears. Years ago, about 14 to be exact I planted some of them in my front perennial garden. They took over! About 3 years later I tore them out and tossed them. I have been fighting lamb's ears ever since. In 2002 I totally redid that bed, took everything out, let the DH rototill it, and replanted. Just the other day what did I find?? Lamb's ears! About 6 or 7 of them scattered through out!

Plan? I gave up planning. When I plan, the short plants in the front are towering over the plants in the middle, which both end up towering over the one in the back. So, plan don't work; I've tried; I've failed.

I'm always ripping out and replacing, or moving. Come next spring, I'll be ripping out some agastache's and moving the 5' and 7' plants from the FRONT of the bed and putting them in the BACK of the bed. Just part of my "what the heck was I thinking" issues...then again, I didn't plan (research)...

Iris, iris, iris, some of them have really gotten thick. I'm really tired of the oriental poppies - pretty for 2 weeks, then dead foliage for 2 months, if they're lucky I'll tuck them to the back of the new bed I'm starting. The floppy galliardia goblin is also questionable - love that it blooms all season, but too floppy, I want a more compact version. Several peonies are in too much shade, hydrangea too much heat, they need to change places. And the double gaiety dianthus are laying all over the hardy geraniums, they need a new home. Lots of annuals are starting to look sad, they need to go to make more room for potted perennials I haven't wanted to plant in this heat.

With this drought we've been having this year I am rethinking my long garden, some things in there are really suffering like the rudbeckia Goldsturm - love them but boy do they wilt and sulk! I'm planning on overhauling this garden next year by adding more drought tolerant plants and shrubs. Everything just looks so sad in that garden right now - the bed is 98' long and to water it takes hours so if plants are in there they have to be able to take a little drought.
