Allergic reaction to leaves?

Anyone know of or heard anything regarding whether the leaves of african violets can cause an allergic skin reaction such as hives?

Hi Lilpanda,

I think African violet leaves are pretty benign to most people. I'm sure, though, that one could find a person that would be sensitive to it if he or she hunted around long enough. It seems like one can find someone to be allergic to just about anything. Why, do you know someone whom you believe to be allergic to violet leaves?

Hi Larry,

The reason I ask is because I broke out in a BAD case of hives soon after purchasing an african violet plant. Just trying to pinpoint the cause, being that it was my very first african violet plant and first ever case of hives. I've narrowed it down to either the plant or soba (a japanese noodle dish), which is something different I ate that day that I've never eaten before. I'm hoping it was the latter, as it's easier to restrict that food item from my diet, than it is to give up my african violet! However, as a precaution, I've been handling my av with gloves on. :)

No personal experience with that particular mix but many of the so-called "organic" mixes do contain some ingredients that can be a cause of skin contact allergies - composted manures for example. But please understand that "growing organically" does not mean you have to use seed starting mixes that are labeled "organic". Most all seed starting mixes are organic. They contain nothing more than peat, coconut coir, vermiculite, and perlite - all organic substances and that is all that is needed for seed starting. Growing mixes that contain fertilizers additives, if those fertilizers are synthetic, are another matter. Dave

I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but carpeting is usually always covered in chemicals. One of the worst offenders as far as furnishings for the home. I'm always trying to keep chemicals out of the house and haven't bought carpeting in a long time because of that. If that were the case, it wouldn't even need to be contact with the rug, it could be in the air of that room. But, if they are lying on it, you could try putting sheets over the carpet for a week so they aren't coming in contact with it and see if that changes anything. Or of course, keep them out of the room for long enough to see if there is improvement. I was talking to someone the other day who has tropical birds and she said they are very sensitive to household chemicals. They've been known to die from fumes from cheap teflon pans, and glade plug ins and the fumes from using self cleaning ovens. I thought that was very telling about what we are exposed to in the home on a daily basis. Of course we are larger than a bird, but dogs aren't that much larger.

My mother was highly allergic to many different soaps which would cause her hands to red, scaly and inflamed. And to many toothpastes, where she determined that it was the fluoride that was a problem for her. She had to keep changing toothpastes every time the one she had been buying announced "New! Improved! Now with Flouride!!" When the city announced that they were going to add fluoride to the tap water she fought it and spoke at one of the public comment meetings, but it was clear they were only holding the public comment meeting because they were required to do so, and they had already made their decision. At that meeting she told the city council that if they added fluoride to the water and she got cancer and died, she would sue them for every penny they had. They did, she did, and, of course, she didn't.

from the University of Alabama extension page on this weed: "The flowers appear as tannish, pea-sized clusters at each node. Unfortunately, mulberry weed is in a hurry to produce seed, so flowers usually appear when plants have only three leaves on them. Plants 2 inches tall are capable of producing copious amounts of seed. Larger plants that get missed in the weeding process produce a truly scary amount of seed. According to one source, the seeds are explosively discharged and spread up to 4 feet from the original plant. The first line of defense against this pestiferous weed is to learn to identify it. Then, dispatch it post haste to the trash bin. This one does not go in the compost heap because my pile never gets hot enough to kill seeds. Be sure to pull it before the seeds mature, which in landscape beds, is most concentrated in September and October. Because light is needed for germination, one study found that a 2-inch layer of mulch gave good, but not complete, control. Chemical weed control is easy using any of the direct contact herbicides,"

lilpanda, I hope you aren't allergic to AVs! I get hives over a lot of things myself, so you have my sympathies. (I use a new break out of hives as an excuse to buy 100% silk shirts. Very soothing. ;-)

This is a little late, as I haven't checked in in a while ...

Could you have been reacting to something that was on the African Violet? It could have been treated with a pesticide or something of the like.
