Allergic reaction to commercial soilless mix

I've used other seed starting mediums in the past, but this year, my local hardware superstore started carrying Burpee's Organic Seed Starting Mix. I'm trying to grow as organically as possible this year, so I bought several bags and have started about 10 flats of seedlings.

My hands have been dry and cracked all winter, so at first I didn't think anything of the slight burning sensation I've been having in my right hand. I also didn't think too much about how the right hand seems to be cracking and bleeding more, especially on the sides of my middle knuckles. But tonight, after a few days of healing, and immediately after starting two more flats, my knuckles are once again cracked, bleeding, and burn slightly, despite several handwashings.

Has anyone else experienced this?? I've never had an issue starting seeds without wearing gloves before this; should I have been wearing gloves? And exactly HOW "organic" can a mix be, if it causes this kind of reaction in my skin?

I'm a little worried about eating veggies from the plants I've already started. I'd appreciate any input you all have.

Its possible that you might have a skin sensitivity to something in the mix. Just because its organic doesn't mean you can't be allergic to it. I doubt eating the veggies will cause you any problems. That said you might want to try a different brand of seed mix or wear gloves. I'm grow several things that I'm allergic to but I take precautions.

I've never had that reaction. But last year I bought some big bags of Miracle Grow.

I threw them on my shoulder to carry them and had a rash on my neck and face the next day.

The rash got a little better, then I carried the bags on my shoulder again to move them. The rash got worse.

It had to have came from the bags.

It is quite possible to raise rabbits without feeding pellets. I've been doing it for several years. Mine get alfalfa hay, small amounts of grain and as many greens as the season allows. Most of the green feed is in the form of safe weeds: dandelions, chicory, young dock leaves, clover, alfalfa, Queen Anne's lace, sow thistles, prickly lettuce, willow, apple or pear twigs and leaves and many others. If this idea interests you, please be aware that it does take time to transition the rabbits from a pelleted diet to a natural one. I did it gradually over about two months. and placed them outside in full sun. I have yet to see any type of physical changes, but will keep you updated. I gather, they may need a few days to acclimate to their new surroundings. While we have no idea how big these plants are now, placing inside grown transplants such as yours "outside in the full sun" without first gradually harding them off is a great way to kill them and kill them fast. No seedlings, regardless of age, should be exposed to direct sun immediately after transplanting. Learn about the requirement called hardening-off plants. Please, if it isn't already too late, remove them from the direct sun and place them in shade and protected from the wind. The normal routine for hardening off, which is discussed in great detail in this forum, is 1 hour the first day and increased exposure by an hour or two daily. Thanks for all the replies! @digdirt: Yep, the seafood meal is composted first, but I appreciate the suggestion to ask her doctor--I'll do that. Just curious, why do you say potting soil is not recommended for containers? My potting soil bag states that is what it's supposed to be used for. @dirtguy50: I started growing tomatoes and other veggies for just my household and thankfully, no one here has the seafood allergy problem. Ocean Forest has always given me the best results, which is why I use it. After I saw that I was going to have lots of extra tomatoes, I started thinking about who I could gift them to and my mom came to mind. I definitely wouldn't risk giving anything harmful to my mom, which is why I came on the forum to ask this question and am also checking with a couple of health professionals. Thanks. @ajsmama: I really like the idea of growing a separate pot of tomatoes in a different mix just for my mom; thanks for the suggestion! Strangely enough, my mom is the only one that has severe food allergies. I'm grateful I didn't inherit them. @Carolyn: Thanks for your helpful answer! So given that the tomatoes are popping now and have been potted in/fertilized with seafood I won't take any chances. I'll just grow some more tomatoes next year in a separate pot and mix. My mother was highly allergic to many different soaps which would cause her hands to red, scaly and inflamed. And to many toothpastes, where she determined that it was the fluoride that was a problem for her. She had to keep changing toothpastes every time the one she had been buying announced "New! Improved! Now with Flouride!!" When the city announced that they were going to add fluoride to the tap water she fought it and spoke at one of the public comment meetings, but it was clear they were only holding the public comment meeting because they were required to do so, and they had already made their decision. At that meeting she told the city council that if they added fluoride to the water and she got cancer and died, she would sue them for every penny they had. They did, she did, and, of course, she didn't.

No personal experience with that particular mix but many of the so-called "organic" mixes do contain some ingredients that can be a cause of skin contact allergies - composted manures for example.

But please understand that "growing organically" does not mean you have to use seed starting mixes that are labeled "organic".

Most all seed starting mixes are organic. They contain nothing more than peat, coconut coir, vermiculite, and perlite - all organic substances and that is all that is needed for seed starting.

Growing mixes that contain fertilizers additives, if those fertilizers are synthetic, are another matter.

Actually, you can get quite sick from potting media, garden soil, compost, etc. Lung and /or skin infections are not all that rare with nursery workers and others who have their hands in stuff like that all day. I had a young employee who developed a very serious problem not too long after working with our bark based nursery mix.

It was a long time ago and I no longer recall what the pathogen was...there are several to beware of that have nothing to do with manure or allergic reactions. The allergy issue, however, is very common!

Yes, I get a very itchy contact dermatitis when potting soil gets on my skin. It has been happening for several years.
