Need some suggestions for a memorial rose for my dog.

I am looking for some suggestions on a repeat rose that I can plant in my garden in memory of my yellow lab Dixie...We had to put her down last Monday and I would like to plant a rose bush that can take morning sun and afternoon shade. I would like orange or yellow but up to any suggestions. It can be a climber or a bush..Our children made a stepping stone for her and I would like to find a rose to plant next to it. Any suggestions???

Sorry jess2132000. Dog Rose doesn't repeat and is not the color you're looking for either. Guess I just got carried away. Sorry about your dog too.

Hi vlodom, I was just going through some similar decisions recently and rhonda in upstate SC convinced me to go with Crepuscle. She posted a picture of it growing at one year old that is incredibly enticing. Plus, it will do that well in less than ideal sunlight. And it has few thorns. Just a really nice rose, I think. I've been interested in New Dawn too. Someone has been working on me towards one of New Dawn's seedlings: Penny Lane. That one has really good shade tolerance, she said, and she loved its fragrance. I assume it will grow as well in the Piedmont as New Dawn will, though she was writing from Kansas. Some other rambling or climbing roses you might take an interest in: Madame Alfred Carriere, Dublin Bay, Red Fountain, Quadra, Laguna, Reve d'Or, Jaune Desprez, William Allen Richardson, Sympathie, Goldfinch, Creme de la Creme, Climbing Pinkie (especially the cultivar at the Antique Rose Emporium). If you'd really like a lot of bushiness as well as the ability to put out some long canes, then take a look at Ghislaine de Feligonde. It ought to mix well with Crepuscle too. Avoid Iceberg, including climbing Iceberg, if you want to try to avoid having to spray for blackspot on the east coast. I wanted Iceberg so much that I decided to give it a try anyway... but sure enough, all I'd read about it being more of a problem on this side of the country turned out to be correct. I have to echo all with my regrets for your loss. I also have to echo Diane and ceterum, to also query the Antique forum. I know it sounds kind of scary at first with all of the long names but people will be gentle with you and they are not hard to come by at all by mail order from reputable places. The reason you may be more pleased with old garden roses is that often they have more disease resistance, more and more of us don't spray due to the environment, but honestly speaking who has the time and dedication? This might also be why the ones you lost didn't fare well. I particularly like the 'found' roses with names of who found them or where they were found. Some may only bloom once which isn't bad, but for your application you may want to make sure that they bloom throughout your season. I finally dove into them this last year and am very excited about how they will look and do, you sound like it wouldn't take too much for you to become just as excited if only you had better guidance (and enabling, you've come to the right place for that!) than what's at the local big box or nursery. Although you've described your needs pretty well, you might want to think about colors before you start studying what to get. If I may suggest, you might want to focus on bold (but not overly gaudy) colors. I especially like yellow as an accent, it is such a happy color to me and that's what you'll want to feel in the spot, not that she's gone of course, but all the happy memories of times shared. Too many pale colors would just get me down, I know, and that's where you want to go to get away from such a mood. You might also want to include her favorite color as a main color or accent depending on what it is. If she liked white or pale pink, just pair it with a saturated dark pink or the lovely purple clematis above. What a touching and loving thing for you to do; your husband is a very lucky man. I too am not from your area but would think some of the smaller tea roses like Westside Rose Cream Tea would be wonderful; it blooms all the time and is bushy with lovely large blooms. There are wonderful climbers like Reve d'Or which bloom practically all the time. Cl. Pinkie is a darling rose you might consider. I hope that people from your area will chime in to help you with this wonderful project. The old roses like teas, Chinas and noisettes are beautiful and romantic, and will actually do better than many modern roses in terms of vigor and disease resistance. Chamblee's is a good on-line vendor in your part of the country. Have a look at their site and find some things you like and then you can always come back to the forum to ask advice about these. This is a wonderful project you're undertaking and we'd love to help you make it something beautiful, something your wonderful mother-in-law would have appreciated, and a peaceful spot for your husband to spend time being with her. Michelle and Trish, terribly sorry to hear of the loss of your Babes, as Trish agrees, planting a rose in memory is one of the nicest things you can do and look how it has got her hooked on roses. For my girlfriend who was killed in a car accident in 1992, her sweet sister bought me the rose Loving Memory. I have it right in the foreground off our deck and it indeed has always been a loving memory ever since. It is a gorgous rose, but alas is red, so I know it will not suit you. But I was terribly taken back by some of the names that our friends came up with, there must be something for your little boy for sure. Make sure you check them all out thoroughly on HMF, because you will want a good strong one that blooms a lot. I do not have Julia Child myself, but it has been such a popular rose on this board that I am sure it would bring youg great joy. Crepescule is apricot color. I found out that it means Twilight in French. We had a cat named Twilight that died a few years ago and I'm going to put a stone with her name on it next to it.

Golden Celebration is a nice yellow Austin.

Crepuscule is lovely, but probably a bit tender for PA.
What about Buff Beauty, the wonderful, fragrant HM? It's said to be hardy to Zone 6. Would that work?

Sorry to hear about Dixie. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet.

I second Buff Beauty. It's sort of yellow Labrador colored, and it can take some shade. Also smells wonderful and is easy to care for.

Jess, I am so sorry to hear about Dixie. I know how you feel and my heart goes out to you.

I am reaping some happyness after planting a rose too for our Springer, Patrick. We chose St. Patrick for him. It did not do that good last year, first year we planted it, but my oh my, what a beauty it is now I am so thrilled with it.

Also too, I would recommend florabunda Amber queen for health colour, always in bloom, long lasting flowers and nicely fragrant - also very sturdy form of the bush, not a bit floppy.

Unconditional Love by Paul Barden was named for, in his words, " This rose was named to honor the bond we humans have with the animals we keep as pets." An unbelievably vigorous moss miniature. Maybe what your looking for.

I am very sorry to hear about your dog. That is a rough thing to go through.

I think that any rose that would appeal to you would be nice, and I think it is wise to make it a special place for her memory.

Perhaps Morden Sunshine? Yellow and orange blend, dependable rebloom, and very hardy. It does very well in my garden.

So sorry to hear about Dixie - it's so hard to lose a beloved pet. I can second Unconditional Love - it's a gorgeous rose, stays pretty compact, a lovely deep red.

Golden Zest is another lovely rose - yellow - that can take morning sun and afternoon shade - here in my garden I think it would benefit with some afternoon shade as it's not happy with too much sun ... it's got a lovely lemony fragrance, get's about 5 feet tall (in my zone - could be different in yours) and is a good repeat bloomer.
