Yes, I planted 'Evelyn' in a very deep hole to protect the graft union and to encourage it to strike out on its own roots. I did offer to return it to Jung's if they reimburse me for shipping and handling. Not sure if they will want it back. 'Evelyn' is starting to leaf out. I'm guessing a trip back would kill it.

I'm with Ingrid on this one - with over 700 roses and the need for replacements each year, there's no way I could disguise rose purchases even if I wanted to, and I'm glad I don't want or need to. Like a lot of other people posting, he has his hobbies and I have mine, and the monthly storage fees alone for his classic cars balances out a fair bit of my rose purchases anyway. At the same time, most of my rose purchases aren't obviously roses to a non-gardener, since band plants just look like random perennials, and I tend to plant them pretty quickly after arrival so they don't sit around and get annoying. The only time I can recall he was a bit frustrated by rose purchases was when Eurodesert went out of business and I bought over 100 of Cliff's mother plants. You really notice how many roses are arriving when each comes in its own 3' X 5' heavy box, but bless his heart his main comment was a heavy sigh and a bemused question, "More roses?" As tightly as I pack my garden beds, you don't realize how many roses are in a given bed till you actually count. The one request he made was that I not add any new rose beds to accommodate any purchases, which seems quite reasonable to me (not to mention I've run out of good spots anyway). He's been really very supportive of my gardening, even though he still can only tell a rose from a peony from phlox because I tend to have more roses than anything. He'll frequently comment how nice the flowers in the front yard look, and mentions when he can see roses blooming from standing at the kitchen window. He even commented that he was able to trim the front hedges relatively pain free that have roses backed up right to the edge of the yew bush. Last week I cut some roses to give to friends, but they forgot to take them home. I was taking them up to go give to a neighbor when my DH interrupted and said, "But I like them too. Let's keep them, I really like these." Just when you think he doesn't notice he surprises you with appreciation. Yep, he's a keeper. He's probably rather not see so many roses, but he likes the effect as an end result. Cynthia

The good news is that this is most likely a warm climate rose, so you live in the perfect place for it. The bad news is that ROSES ARE NOT HOUSE PLANTS, period. However, the bad news is easy to solve! Put it outside in filtered sun immediately!. The air in our homes is WAY too dry for roses, they don't get enough light, and many other problems. It will die if you leave it indoors. After it is outside in filtered light (it should remain outdoors forever), wait a couple of weeks so that it can get used to being outside, and used to getting some light. Then you can move it into full sun. DO NOT feed it, do not spray it with anything - just make sure it gets enough water. Right now it is trying to grow roots. Oh, I just had a thought - is it in a plastic pot? I have had baby roses die in plastic pots in full sun in the hot summer simply because the pot got too hot and they literally cooked. If that is a plastic pot, I would leave the rose in filtered light for a bit longer, and then get a much much bigger clay pot and put it in that. Then you could put it into full sun. Then just leave it alone for 1-2 months. When it recuperates and starts growing, you can feed it according to the instructions. Nip off any flower buds you see while it is still tiny - it will grow better faster without having to support flowers. When it gets maybe three times as big as it is now, I would plant it in the ground (in full sun) - sounds as if you have other roses outside, and know how to do that. Good luck! Hi Sara, Boy it's so hard to recommend a rose sometimes. This relentless ridiculous humidity and heat has not been good for the garden. You did ask about the Veranda series. I just don't know what to say. Maybe they have not been fed well enough I don't really know. I can say that in high humidity the blooms are about the size of quarters if that. Since spring it has been humid and I've have not seen a bloom on Jolie that has not bull headed. Now she is only 2 years old. But I well be extremely surprised if she makes it to year three. Even thou I love my Cream Veranda, I don't believe she is that great in humidity. Great bush but the flowers are beginning to bother me. The same goes for Floral Fairy Tale. I now have 2 different FFT's. My original which behaves like Cream Veranda and the FFT not from Roses Unlimited. The RU rose may turn out to be a better rose but have not had it long enough to know yet. So far it is healthy with a much larger flower. I do believe that the Verandas would do very well in drier heat. I can recommend Golden Fairy Tale it is healthy. Not perfect but pretty darn good and flowers well. The others did not flower all that well for me but were healthy. I had them for 3 years shovel pruned in the fourth. This does not include FFT as it never did fit the style of fairy tale series. I am extremely happy with South Africa and Sunny Sky. If Plum Perfect makes it thru winter it is a winner here. Savannah is looking very vigorous and flowering a lot in it's first year but has anthracnose. Maybe that is my fault I don't know. The roses have been covered in dew all night every night for 2 months now. I'm very happy with Flamenco Rosita very healthy in its 2nd year. Nice sized blooms this year not huge but nice and unaffected by the humidity and heat. I have many more Kordes that are too young to comment on yet. Good luck in your search. I don't know about you but my energy is only going so far these days. I do have many other roses that are doing very well. Just not as double as you were asking about.
