I have a number of African violets that were my mothers. She passed away after Mother's Day at the age of 80. She got these African violets from her mother, who lived in Batesville, Arkansas. I have 20 plants growing from my divisions of various African violets. I am certain that one of these plants was my grandmothers. It has a purple back and is somewhat ruffly. I am certain these plants precede the 1970s, and I am sure they are probably older than that. There are no names. When they bloom, is there any way I can identified them, or will they always be NOID.

Hi,
There are over 15,000 AV's listed in the Master Variety List (MVL) from AVSA. Unless you know where they were purchased or if they have something distictive about them you probably won't be able to find their names. Just enjoy them as NOIDs.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have always enjoyed plants. Some of these, (Prayer Plant, Aloe, and others) have been with my mother for over 30 years. She has kept one of my plants for that time. I have invested in various types of pots( oyama, ceramic self watering). I also have a "vintage" african violet plant stand that I will have to rejeuvenate. One of six plastic inserts is proken. I have plants at office and at home. I see new green. Some of these were close to DNR. Thanks John

Well, I sent a long answer and Houz must of ate it. My iris are blooming now so I can at least let you know the colors of those that do bloom. Some have dug themselves in so deep they haven't bloomed. I have-white, light blue, dark and light pink, black, dark and light purple, yellow and a few that are speckled or streaked. See Day lily picture. I don't know which plants have which colors. I would have to wait until the end of May to know. I traded and bought about 20 more varieties that I don't have pictures of. I was wondering what colors you have?

Very strange!. If I inhabited the species world I could offer more. Could be a variety? I've seen orchids benched with id's like Stelis species ex Brazil. I've got a Dockrillia labeled "new species ex New Guinea" All i know about it is that it has red flowers....still waiting.... Are there some experts over there who could shed more light.

Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to keep them in mind and compare during this season and take pics of blooms, etc. I would guess it's a more recent introduction. I honestly thought it would be easier to Identify because it's a little different, but oh well, I guess I don't need a name to enjoy it :) . I love the hosta variety at homestead perennials- she often has a lot of the newer introductions and it is only 10 minutes from my house. But she doesn't tend to label her plants well, which drives me a little crazy to occasionally have to rely on my knowledge or her memory for an ID. Still..... Everything I've purchased there has grown fast and is healthy, and she has a lot of stuff I can't find anywhere else without paying for shipping, plus amazingly so far she has never been wrong on an ID she has given me (that I know of).

You know what... let's ignore the whole 'starts with a N or H thing. Lists of Japanese hostas are pointing me towards H. kikutii which does not have an N or H although hyuga giboshi does. I imagine we need a flower and a picture of the leaf underside now. Unfortunately, the rabbits from hades ate this down for the third year straight, so it will be very, very small and sad =)

John.If you mean by plastic inserts the trays that the plants sit on you may be able to purchase new ones if they are a standard size. I myself have two Flora carts. one is over 30 years old and the other is about 8. I bought my new stand from Cape Cod violetry and I know I could replace them if I had to. The other place that might have trays is IGS. Follow the link below.
