Do you have cardboard that makes a difference what to do with it. Why not give it over to roadside pickup with regular paper composting of the community.
If it has compostibles pick-up.

Reading about what glues are in cardboard make-up, they offer that it is not the thing to put into household compost piles. Such glues do not break down easily.
If we believe the composting of treated lumber should not be placed into piles, then why not keep the glue cardboard out of it.

Cardboard tho does break down well when wet doesn't it.

If you review all the previous discussions here on composting cardboard you'll find that most of us don't have any concerns about using it - adhesives and all - even in very large amounts. ;)

Ultimately, it's your choice. If recycling is an option for you, fine. For many it isn't available. And, without using cardboard it can be difficult this time of year for many to come up with sufficient carbon material for your compost.

We returned a broken chair to WalMart recently. Our truck was full of cardboard and the person volunteered to take the whole load as part of their recycling program. He said their recycling was not advertised anywhere that he knew about.

My city wont take cardboard for compost and the recycler that do our curb pick up wont take it either. They don't take much of any thing it seems.

I used to work in a container plant, we made custom corrugated to ship the cartons in, we had bales of waste paper, and bales of corrugated. The corrugated was worth a lot more than the regular card stock. It confuses me as to why the recyclers wont take it. If it gets wet it is no longer recyclable either.

I compost mine, and also use if for lasagna beds, In the future I might try to get walmart to take my excess though, I have seen bales of it behind the store.

Walmart recycles almost all of their trash! Cor Cardboard goes in the bailer. To make it more interesting, the plastic hangers that used to go in the trash also go into a bale, as do all the plastic bags that product is shipped in. The sandwich bales*with the hangers and plastic bags* are really fun to make!!!! even the light bulbs are saved and recycled now--, as is the grease from the fryers in the deli and the oil in TLE You can take your stuff in to a WM--they don't advertise this, but they'll take it (why not, they sell the bales, etc.......)

I know this is a very old thread, which I found while Googling about composting cardboard. But, it seems that no one has actually addressed the initial question, so I'll take a stab.

What I have read is that corrugated cardboard is either made with no adhesive (the cellulose fibers stick to themselves) or with a biodegradable cornstarch glue. That's the cardboard itself - not any glossy labels or tape on it, or thick glues on the surface of the cardboard, of course. Some corrugated cardboard does have a thick plastic-y glue applied to the surface to hold it together into a box shape. I peel off labels and tape, remove any visible glue, and then shred or cut the cardboard into smaller pieces, and add it to my pile. It begins to break down almost immediately when enough moisture is present.

I suspect that even the thick glues would not really be HARMFUL in compost - but I don't know if they would break down easily. I do what I can easily do to remove anything that isn't actually cardboard. If I were composting on a larger scale, I'm not sure I'd even remove stuff stuck on the cardboard.

By way of an anecdote... I used to eat cardboard when I was little, with no ill effects. (Well, most would agree there were no ill effects. ;-))
