How to strengthen Japanese Maple trunk.

I have a Coral Bark Japanese Maple (Sango Kaku) that I bought last year. It was about 6' tall last year and was staked up. Even now, it's only about as wide as a Sharpie pen. I let it winter over with the stake. I removed the stake about a month ago and the thing fell over in half and almost touched the ground. I then loose tied the tree to the stake so that it can sway in the breeze but it is still upright.

How do I get the trunk to thicken up and get stronger?
