Japanese maple, cracked trunk

What would cause the trunk of my Japanese maple to crack, and is it anything I should worry about? There is a thin crack in the otherwise-smooth bark running all the way from the ground up to where it starts branching. I first noticed it over the weekend after leaving a soaker hose running all day but I'm not sure if that actually caused it. It's growing on a terraced slope and I haven't allowed it to dry out much all summer, but I don't think I've been overwatering it, either. The tree was planted by a previous owner and is probably about 10-15 years old, cultivar unknown but it has dark (especially in the spring), deeply cut leaves. (The color is much darker in the spring, emerging a deep purple but turning sort of a bronzy green in summer. It gets a bit too much sun, and usually has leaf scorch by early August.)
