So, did you pick up a DD?

I posted about mine on here a few days ago. Mine is scrawny in a bed of otherwise mostly healthy, full roses. I've heard this from some other people too; apparantly it's not a very vigorous rose?

Mine has put out one bloom, which is on the bush now. The bloom is beautiful, but the scent is not that strong. Smells like a classic HT smell to me. I was kind of surprised, because I figured that the "double" delights were probably bloom color and smell. The smell is nothing special on it.

That said, I'm letting this one grow out and if it does well by the end of the season or early next spring, it will stay. If not, it goes. Vigor is a HUGE priority for my choice of roses.

What was the temperature like when you were er..sniffing roses? My DD was not as fragrant as I remember from last year but then I thought, Of course, it is cool right now and heat enhances scent. Just wondering? I grow DD in a pot. It does well but perhaps in my zone it never grows to be big enough to go in my rose beds. Chicago Peace is another one I grow in pots. They never achieve any great size even when the rose itself is healthy. Susz

I have half a dozen Double Delight plants, all on their own roots. They die back considerably each winter but come back well and are all blooming now. Mine have a very strong lucious fragrance, but perhaps it because they are mature plants having been in the ground for 7 years here and 10 years at my old home.
DD is the rose I use to show others what a rose should be like, Beautiful and fragrant. I've pursuaded many to grow roses due to DD.

Thank you Karl bapst, you seem to praise this cultivar lavishly. Will you post a few pictures of your perfect shrubs? So that we can judge whether it is really the case.

DD was delicate in the beginning, but after about 4 years to get established, it became a modestly vigorous plant. It is more spreading than tall, but can be full and bushy. The smell is usually strong, but not always. And it is a unique spicy scent that is like no other rose I have ever smelled. It's not the most prolific bloomer, but puts forth a steady procession of bloom. Their unique beauty and fragrance make it worth whatever flowers I get. It's really a special rose and very worth growing. A true classic.

Sometimes WalMart blows you away. I found an amazing Daybreaker there, it was huge and so healthy. I only regret getting only one. They have not had it again. It is my favorite rose.

DD is one of my strongest smelling roses. So either it's not DD or the bloom was old and lost it's fragrance.

My Double Delight was absolutely fragrant and beautiful, but not very vigorous. In fact, it did not make it through this past winter, which was extremely harsh for us... sigh!

Yes, she still gets blackspot but as long as I keep spraying, she doesn't give me too much grief.

I just love her look and the scent of the blooms are to die for. The plant doesn't grow leggy like some other ones and the height is right where I want it so I don't need a ladder to get a whiff of her sweetm spicy smelling blooms.

I can see why this rose is a winner of many awards:)

Buford, the WM had a dozen DDs. There were flowers of all stages. I smelled them all. The fragrance was faint. I bet everyone who has it (like Jason101) knows ...

Nevertheless, I still say DD is a lovely rose.

I must say that I have never smelled a DD without that special DD scent. Maybe the roses just needed a little extra something, whether water, new pots, who knows? The only reason I don't grow it is because I am not sure if it a prolific or stingy bloomer, and I have no patience with roses that don't bloom enough. It happens that I have only seen neglected bushes of it so I don't know how it does when it is happy.

Double Delight is a prolific bloomer here in So. Calif. when grown well :-D

Many of us just can't detect all rose fragrances. Like you, I find my Rugosa very fragrant. But, I can't detect a strong smell from my HT's including Tiffany, Mr. Lincoln, etc. So, it may not be DD, it may be you.

agree with previous post, I can't smell any of my red roses at all, Angel Face and Abe Darby are about the only ones I can detect something, plus the DD we are talking about. Also, some "fragrant" roses just smell awful to me.
