Feeding minis and semi minis

I recently switched from Schultz's to DynaGro Gro and can really tell a difference. Plants are in Oyamas. But then I heard Annie say on her pod cast that a friend who has minis and semis recommends diluting feeding semis and minis. (I think by half.) When I first got some of my AVs, I had them too close to the new lights, and I've switched bulbs, increased the distance, and so far so good. You can see on this Rob's Willawong that the leaves are greening up from where it was leached by my lighting mistake, but I wonder if this is too much? Does anyone here just feed their minis the same solution?

I would think that 1/4 of the teaspoon per gallon will be appropriate - Dyna Gro has low numbers, while if we would have some perfect balanced 20:20:20 fertilizer(show it to me!!!), you would use 1/8.

Minis - if overfed - will show the orange crystals in a center on the crown - that will be your indicator to reduce the amount of the fertilizer. And yes - you are correct - they show them much faster than standards. But if you reduce the fertilizer too much - you will slow the growth. Mini- or semi-mini trailers can take more fertilizer than mini rosette plant - because they are actually large enough plants with small leaves.
Seems like you are doing a good job on your plants. Trailers need to grow in shallow pans - and so far Oyama didn't make them. So consider at some point moving it to the shallow "bulb" pot sitting on the top of the deli container with a solution. For whatever unexplainable reason as soon as they get into this kind of pot - they do much better.

I use 1/4 strength per gallon of either Orchid food or Jack's classic 20-20-20.

Hi, Sara: I only have trailers and have grown Tiny Wood Trail so here's my experience: No pot larger than 1.5" to 2" Once your plant is fully developed, you can make tiny, tiny slits in the neck and where you have made your slits, new crowns will grow. Tiny Wood Trail is really, really small. Almost a micro-mini. It also does well in thumb pots. Good luck, Linda

What are standards, minis, semi-minis and trailers?

These are different types of African violets. The most common type of African violet is called a standard. It will normally be about 12 inches across, although show plants are often much larger. Minis and semi-minis are the same as standard violets, but they never get as large. Trailers are African violets with multiple crowns. These are not plants that have produced a lot of suckers. These are a trailing variety that puts out new crowns. The care of all these violets is pretty much the same as standards. However, minis and semi-minis must be repotted more often. Thanks Su! I will let you know how the streps do. AND I am really antsy to start some of my mini trailers and micro mini leaves! There are some that could be started. But first I want to make sure I have the right stuff for them. I am thinking a little raspberry container cause it has a lid. The lid and the bottom have slashes in them for great ventilation.
