I decided I better post these before the components get worn out!! I want to do before and after, but those befores are on a different iPad.

I have been lurking GW through 3 kitchens, and all the help has been greatly appreciated!

This was a new-to-us house. It was COVERED in golden oak from laminate floor to top of cabinets.

Cabinets: custom from the now-defunct Eagle Industries

Countertops: custom from the now defunct H&H woodworking

Appliances: Thermador

Sink: Kohler Whitehaven

Faucet: Elkay Explore

Backsplash: Lowe's Crema Marfil

Floor: Cabin-grade hickory

I moved into a home with a horrific excuse for a garden last summer. This year, I finally was able to start working on getting a new garden going, but it was already mid-summer by the time I could hire the landscaper due to money issues. When he suggested I add in a few Knock-outs to get a fast punch of color, I explained how I used to grow roses at my old house, and wasn't to fond of this idea. He told me that the Knock-outs weren't his favorite either, however, he thought that adding just a few under my ancient hydrangea tree might work and at least get me some roses for the time being since it was too late in the season for me to purchase the ones I really wanted. Surprisingly, I'm finding I really like the ones he picked out - 3 pink double Knock-Outs. They have gotten much larger than I anticipated, flower constantly, no disease; they look fantastic. I wouldn't get any more than this but I'm pleased with the ones that are there and I do think it was an excellent suggestion on his part for my current needs. I will, however, be ordering "regular" roses this season to plant for next spring :D

Gray, Well, you're right, I should have figured out the "guy" room. My buildings were not dioramas. I built on 1" scale and recreated both exterior and interior. The project took me to New Zealand and spent time there with a historian responsible for maintaining the Antarctica expedition buildings. The history and stories of the men living in these "huts" became a passion. Sadly, the cost of finishing this project became out of control and didn't get a grant applied for. It is part of the many boxes I cannot let go of...building shell, books, tons of materials. Small house, but big shed storing part of my life. If you were to build your plans it would be amazing how the project would become so much more real for you. The hard work for this has already been done with the created plans shown. All could be built with matte board, I'd even suggest buying it in the colors you are planning. The simplicity of yours would even allow the furniture to be done...but use bass wood or plastics for these. You wouldn't need a lot of tools and the cost minimal. I let go of the model building a while ago. Was doing some freelance for a magazine submitting projects, and it became too commercial. The ability to be creative was lost as I had to design what readers were interested in and freelance is what it means "free" after cost of materials and time involved. My art is now photography mixed with chalk pastels. Primarily close ups of architectural details and lost items found. I like those that show time passed and the affect of element of nature. Use Photoshop and am playing with possibilities of printing large format now. Creative beings cannot let things sit long without evolving into more. The jump in computers is so beyond that what can be done on a lap top is far more than where I started. Me presence at the time put many an architect and engineer into shock...they had to let go of their pencils for keyboards. There is still a need for the high end number crunching computers for engineering and output. My son and I were talking one day about terms which he wondered the meaning of..."do not spindle, punch or staple". What was a spindle? This evolved into talking about learning computers via punch cards. The leap you mentioned...he also trained on computers using punch cards and is in his late 30s. I'll let him feel old. They do use metal framing here, but not often and I don't understand the reasoning for continuing to use wood when this is avialable. On the total opposite of what you are doing I would build a straw bale, the natural "off" of walls, etc. intrigue me. It is not something easily built depending upon where one is located due to permits. Even building a home smaller than a specific size isn't possible unless rural. One can remodel a smaller home, but tis the closest to getting such within city limits. Gads...the Platters? I just watched a Johnny Mathis special and headed into the personal past. And most of this was totally off topic, but at we are in the conversation side.

So very sorry to hear that your dear mom never saw the completion of your kitchen here on this earth but know that she is happily smiling down on you from heaven. I agree with Bee, your mom will wink at you from time to time. I lost my dearest friend, my mother, nine years ago. I miss her dearly but she still sends me a wink from time to time. Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous. I love your home, it is so very charming. I lam so fond of a one story home especially as I get older. Our main home is two stories and more steps than I care for. Our other home is a one story that I love. Unfortunately hubby has to have garages and has two huge garages at our country home and there is no room for additional garage space in our other house. I will definitely return to this post over and over again for inspiration. I can't imagine a lovelier addition. Best of luck to you and your DH!!!

Butternut, I'm thinking more of proportions like this (and yes, I realize yoru window is larger and wider), It would be about as long altogether as you have it now, but the longer part would the "drop" (I don't know what the correct term is, sorry!) before the swag rather than the swag itself. I think it also might look better to hang the roman shade higher, so that it's the same height as the cabinets. Which would give you more light/window AND more fabric. That might be worth playing around with.

Lake_Girl, it does seem that way at times!! I think Thermador and my tile installer are still in.....

GaucoGordo, thanks! That tree was in our backyard, dying from 3 years of hard drought, so we cut it down and hauled it from Texas to Kentucky to make counters! I hauled the flooring from Texas, too, because we got it for $2.00 a sq ft.

Oh wow, it's so beautiful and warm. I love it! What type of maintenance is involved with the counters? Do you have to seal them periodically? How do you clean them? Can they be sanded and refinished in-place over the long run? I really, really love the look and the warmth they bring to a white/stainless kitchen.

The pictures look a little dark on my screen, but from what I can tell I LOVE it. Nice job tying everything together. Those counters are amazing. Love how they look next to the stainless.

I admire kitchens with a row of windows above the sink. If I could, I'd install two more in my kitchen. :)

I love your kitchen. I'm not a fan of all-white kitchens and I love how your counters bring warmth and color. And I love the history behind them. Gorgeous.

I particularly like the detail above the uppers -- different and interesting. And the counters are fabulous! Maybe I could figure out a way to snatch my neighbors' half dead walnut... (JK! tree theft is actually a problem around here!)

Absolutely gorgeous!! That counter is stunning and so is your backsplash. Your whole kitchen seems very warm and inviting. Any more photos you could share? Maybe a view of the island or the other side of the kitchen?

That is why I called it the "mini reveal"!!! I have to get some other pictures--and I want y'all to see the gorgeous BEFORE pictures, but I need to move them to post!!

I really like the faucet. The pull down is easy to use. I have never had any luck with separate sprayers. I have the smaller bar version for the prep sink that did not materialize, if anyone needs it!!

This kitchen is not big by any standard, but it is VERY easy to work in. I have plenty of cabinets and drawers, and decent stretches of counter.

I have put 3 coats of Osmo Polyx oil on the counter in about 18 months. It is not difficult, and it doesn't have much smell. I love the glow it has. I wish I could capture it in a photo.

Soooo pretty! And I love the story of your tree. I can picture that every time you wipe down the counter you daydream for a moment of how the tree looked in Texas. (that's what I would do, anyway)
