Jeri has been one of the people that has really encouraged me about my roses through the years. I really appreciate her friendship and am glad Professor Roush wrote about her and the hybrid musk named for her.

I've never met her; she is to me, like she is to many, encouraging and helpful.

Oh, that is one gorgeous rose. Doesn't she post here quite frequently? I forgot to look and see if it will grow in my zone. I ordered 4 roses from them, and decided to pot them up for awhile. They have been moved from the shade to morning sun. Darn squirrels or chipmunks dug in one, so I sprayed them with Liquid Fence. I've never been mad at the little critters before, have enjoyed their antics and tamed a few, but I've stopped the sunflower seeds and peanuts for the summer. I hope that will reduce some of the digging. They have really damaged a lot of my other plants. In fact, they forced me to transplant my delphiniums which were in a salad dish I'd taken the top off once germinated (put them in deep six packs) before I was ready and ruined a few of the tiny seedlings, totally messed up my viola window box I had set out to harden off, they were fragile as it was. It worked out ok for the delphs not to wait for the second leaves, they had long taproots already and were easy to handle. If the delphiniums all make it, I will have 30 of those. Not bad compared to the price at the nursery, but a lot of work and worry.

Kate, I recently asked "the experts" virtually the same question on another forum. Majority opinion was in favor of keeping the bands potted up and waiting till fall. In part this was due to the vulerability of small plants to clumsy feet, animal damage, but many also felt potted plants get off to a better start. I will say that a few "hot weather" rose growers were of the opinion geting the plants in the ground was preferable to pots in the scorching heat. Where I live the summers are quite hot (90's-100s). Last year I planted my bands directly, and we had one of the most brutal summers on record. My roses did fine. This year, however, I've decided to hold off utill the fall, and have the pot ghetto in a nice sheltered shady location (including my own "Jeri Jennings"). I'm not sure this is an "answer" to your dilemma , but shows, I suppose, that there are different school's of thought on this issue. Both with valid points. As far as advice, I'd just second "Happyintexas's" advice to deeply mulch and deeply water, should you decide to plant. Mulching will protect developing roots, mitigate the sweltering heat and help retain moisture. Also (and forgive the "obviousness" of this advice as I'm sure you know this) make sure you transplant at an hour when the roots won't be exposed to strong sunlight. Personally I'd have a hole prepared, and plant in the last rays of twilight, and then water in. Roots can get fried pretty fast in strong sun. I've also heard of people putting up some sort of screen to protect young roses from overly strong sun (but have not done so myself). Good luck with your decision, Bill

I do believe we have a winner, Robert's Wondrous Ruthie, and I never would have known it without your help. Thank you, ladies. I may post my photos at HelpMeFind, to add to the references there. I agree, it is a lovely rose that flowers abundantly and has thrown up new canes like crazy. She's been a bit plagued with BS in my no-spray garden but I'm hoping that settles down. The misidentification turned out to be a fortuitous mistake because her colors actually play off a nearby Belle Epoque and some other old HTs and HPs quite well. The Jeri Jennings I finally got is at a patio corner, underplanted with an indigenous flower we have here in south Louisiana, called Indian Pink. Thanks again for your help. Kind regards, Janice

Isn't she a cutie! I also have two Jeri Jennings doing about the same as yours. I'll be interested in seeing if there are any long-term differences since one of mine was planted directly in the ground in a partially shaded location and the other was potted and then transplanted in a sunnier spot. So far, the one in the ground/part shade is a little taller and was a little slower to start blooming, but both are blooming at the same rate now. We must compare pics next year as our Jeri Jennings begin maturing. I really like her so far, but she is still very small. Kate

So neat! I haven't been on the Rose forums long, but Jeri has already been an immense help. I only hope that I can be as knowledgeable as her someday.

Jeri has been a leader in rescuing and preserving old roses and in growing roses that work for you, rather than making you work for them. My life is tremendously richer for knowing her and her husband Clay, and being part of her rose circle in this forum and elsewhere. Anybody who comes to our Sacramento symposium in October should have a chance to meet them, or if you know them already, to get a chance to talk a bit.

I don't know the person, but this rose has been on my "buy" list for a year or two - love hybrid musks, and it looks like a really great one. She has to be pretty cool to have inspired such a gorgeous rose.

Thanks, Kay for posting this; I recently got flagged here for a post of a blog that the webmasters interpreted as self-serving, I guess because I had some Google AdSense links on my blog; I've removed the stupid AdSense, but I'm being careful about linking my own blog unless I happen to have a blog on a pertinent rose under discussion.

As far as Jeri Jennings goes, I'd like to meet that famous rosarian someday.

The first time I ever asked a question here, the answer from another poster was, "Just do whatever Jeri says." It's proven to be solid advice. Her knowledge, her sense of humor, and her enduring patience with the rest of us--who keep making the same blunders, over and over--is much appreciated.

I am VERY conscious of the honor and the kindness involved in the naming of that rose -- and I love the rose.

Can you imagine how dreadful it would be, to be honored with a rose, and have it turn out to be a stinker? I am doubly fortunate because this one is a beauty, perfectly suited to my part of the world.

Don't have the rose,so I can't say a thing about it, but the rosarian is a wonderful, logical, reasonable, and fair advisor. I think that Jeri, the person, is a tribute to Jeri, the rose.

One of my favorite roses and forum members.

Prof, Let me see if I have this right. Gardenweb, with it's pop-up, drop down, and hyperlinked text ads had a problem with your blog having a couple simple ads on it? Seems like something about a pot and a kettle should be said.

Oh well, I'd been thinking of removing them anyway...I think they've made about $2 in clicks in 2 years. The pure sleaziness of having the ads was bothering me.
