Pink/Coral Rose turned Red - What happened?

I have a J&P CL Dreamweaver rose bush. For 10 years this bush has produced the most beautiful pink/coral blossoms. This year I'm seeing red flowers. What could be causing such a drastic change?

The only thing that was different this year is that I used the Bayer Rose food in the spring for all my roses. Could the Bayer Rose food be causing this change?

Is it a grafted rose? It sounds like the root stock (Dr Huey) is putting up canes and blooming. Dr. Huey is a dark red rose.

YOu have to dig down to the bud union and remove these canes, preferably by pulling them off.

It's possible that the flowering part of the rose has died and will not come back.

I grow two Rose de Rescht bushes here in hot, humid Alabama. I planted them last February in all day sun. The bushes are nice rounded mounds that are about 3 ft x 3 ft now. The bushes are attractive and have stayed pretty clean without spraying. The blooms are beautiful and smell like heaven. Each had a big first flush...completely covered in blooms and have had good rebloom since. They haven't been covered in blooms again, but have consistently had several blooms each. The blooms don't last long on the bush and only a day as a cut flower, but the petals fall off and self clean without drying up and turning ugly. Color is pretty true to the first pics below that were taken in very hot September...not as purple as they look in the last couple pics which were taken in spring on a different camera.

Sometimes people are not diligent in cutting off the branches that may grow below the graft on the rootstock. Then you get the bloom from the rootstock along with the bloom from the graft. They don't always bloom at the same time. That may be one reason why you have seen two colors on your plant. The pink from the rootstock and white from the hybrid graft. The use of fertilizer may enhance bloom color, but the lack of it does not change color from pink to white. randy

Looking forward to more pics. You know, I think it might be crimson glory (which, i think is what Seil meant to suggest. ). It's a parent of oklahoma and is considred fairly cold tolerant, for an HT. It gets mildewy- which yours is in the pic (pretty common problem with many roses and not a big deal, btw). High centered bloom is the shape of the flower. It's the shape most people think of for a rose. The center of your rose in the pic is rather cupped. Bummer you lost 2 oklahoma. Most hybrid tea roses are classed for zone 7. This is the zone which all the stems should survive the winter without freeze damage. They generally will still survive in zone 6b. Even 5b. I don't think it's an antique rose. Quite a few modern hybrid teas have long sepals like that. And the leaves are definitely modern. Probably an older hybrid tea. Take a look at Tropicana and see if it looks familiar. Here is a link that might be useful: Tropicana with sepals on HMF

If you don't yank the canes producing red flowers out at their base (where they join the rose, even if that's underground) you're going to lose Dreamweaver.

Dr. Huey, the rootstock, has pushed up a sucker. It will take over as time goes by if you don't do something now.

Well that would explain the problem. I already have about 5 red bushes and don't want another one. It would also explain what happened to a yellow rose bush I had also a J&P which after two years turned from yellow to red. The gal at the nursery thought I was crazy when I said it went from yellow to red.

How do I avoid this happening again if I replace these bushes?

Thanks for the help. I really loved Dreamweaver.

Bury your bud union 4-6 inches to protect the graft during the hard winters. That's the first step. The grafted rose may or may not begin growing it's own roots (which can be a good thing) but protecting the plant you want and keeping it happy and healthy will go a long way toward keeping the rootstock at bay. That and pulling the suckers as soon as they make an appearance. Just be sure any new shoots you pull are actually suckers, not basal growth from the bud union, which means more "good" canes.

Can you post a picture of the flowers and the leaves on the stems? If Dr. Huey is producing a sucker, the leaves on the red flowers will look different from the leaves on the pink/coral grafted rose.
