Yet another Mystery Rose (from San Jose HRG this time)

I've tried to obtain Guadalupe Volunteer (a volunteer rose from the San Jose Heritage rose Garden) twice. First time I ended up with a single rose that might be Secret Garden Musk Climber. The second time I ended up with this rose which I do not think is GV. My rose starts out pinkish and fades to white. It has to my nose a slight green apple scent. New shoots are reddish in color.

Anyone have an ID for this rose? Or is it GV?

You didn't say how old your rose was, so this is a bit of a guess. To my memory it looks a lot like 'Lupe's Buttons'. if the rose throws up large, really large, clusters of blooms, that is a good identifier for LB.

Lyn, I got the plant a year ago April but don't know when it was propagated. This is the first bloom. Don't know if it repeats or not. There's a photo of a small Lupe's Buttons on HMF that doesn't really look like mine, especially the foliage.

The more, the merrier. Now, let's just pray for temperate weather for the weekend. :-) AND REMEMBER! The day before the ceremony -- Sun., May 17 -- is the Celebration Of Old Roses. This is not only a wonderful chance to see roses you might never otherwise see -- but a great social occasion. We'll have a GREAT selection of Silent Auction and Raffle roses and other things, to raise funds for the Heritage Roses Groups, but there will also be incredible things of all sorts for sale. DH and I will be there all day. I'll mostly be at the LOcal Groups table, with the Silent Auction roses, so please come say HEY. Place, El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane El Cerrito, CA Doors open 11 a.m. Food available -- and you really won't want to leave early. Virginia -- You probably know that it takes about 10 years for the rose industry to work up from an original seedling to having material for sale. The original Jesse Hildreth mother plant nearly died this past year -- the victim of drought and cemetery management. A new Heritage Roses group has formed, to care for that plant, and the others in that cemetery, and in the town. We have actually begun to believe that the old rose may survive. For the first time in a decade or more, it was actually allowed to send up new basal shoots. This is what it looked like in 2006: See below, the old plant with a circle of new growth. At present, I can more or less count the existing plants on the fingers of one hand . . . The one in my garden. The one in the Sacramento City Cemetery. The mother plant, in the old cemetery. And what ever Jill Perry has, left over from propagating for the Heritage. No nursery has this rose. Though we surely hope one or two soon WILL. Because, you're right. It is a most extraordinary rose.

Hi - We sell some old roses at the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden (Old City Cemetery) open garden every April - this year will be Apr 18th. Our usual college greenhouse hasn't been available so everybody's propagating at home (even Jeri is doing some for us) and our selection will be a bit random - lots of some varieties and not any of others. Hoffman von Fallersleben is one of our favorites and we usually have had it, since it's not widely in commerce, but this year I don't think anybody took cuttings of it. It would be great if you could come up for our open house, Masha, so long as you got home in time to get the guys into bed. We start at 9:30. You could bring the boys along - but they might get smeared with chocolate up here, because we usually have cookies and a very soft spot for little ones.(Daun's daughter had a cookie or two this year, I'm pretty sure.) Jeri's right about taking cuttings - it's just plain rude to do it in somebody else's garden without asking, whether or not it's public. We have roses that are diseased, or that we don't want cut for a variety of reasons. Very few of our roses are under patent, so that's not an issue, but it certainly would be at the Heritage or other public gardens. We also want people to use sterile pruners. And, we want to encourage people to buy from commercial vendors if roses are readily available. Our policy usually is that people who come help can take cuttings, but otherwise, it's on a case-by-case basis. Anita

Thanks guys! Yes Xuan..I still do drop by in here once in a while. I am getting old and getting tired of posting. I think I have posted enough in here for the past 4 or 5 years? Can't remember...Let the younger ones "hold the torch". And yes Xuan that is a clivia. I am so much into it now as this plant thrives so well here in my growing conditions WITHOUT me needing to spray any poisons. Yes, my garden now is chemical free! I've not grown Guadalupe Volunteer, so have no first hand knowledge, but one of Cass' photos on HMF appears to be consistent w/ your photo.
Wouldn't rule it out.

I thought it might could be 'Mel's Heritage,' because of the green apple fragrance (tho that has far more petals) but, no. The foliage is wrong for that, however.

And, no. Not Lupe's Buttons, either.

There's another seedling: "Lupe's Baby," which I now have growing (don't bother to check HMF).
I'll check that plant tomorrow.

Cass's photo DOES look more like my rose than any of the other HMF photos. Thanks. It may turn out to be GV after all. When I saw GV at SJHRG there were no pink tones in the plant.

Jeri, I have Mel's Heritage. Definitely NOT the same rose. MH is a wonderful disease free rose for me. Just really geting started in the ground. Going to be gorgeous.

I don't know. I have GV here, and it is white, and single. And while other things have been unexpectedly opening pink, GV is stark white.

It has been blooming late this year, AAMOF, so I have images of it from yesterday. The blooms are smaller, now, But, look at the foliage.

Jeri, take a look at Cass's photo of GV. It's not single. When I was at SJHRG recently I took a close look at GV and it wasn't single?!

Tomorrow, when I'm on my computer, I'll post pix of Guadalupe Volunteer, taken of the original rose, in the garden. I do not believe that is what you have, but you can judge.

So -- Here is Guadalupe Volunteer.
Far too full for MY rose. Not a match for Fogrose's.

Jeri, is yours always single? There was a single next to GV, that was accidentally taken out a year or so ago when the trees were trimmed, and deadwood removed. Originally Mel called them Birddrop 1 and Birddrop 2.
I agree that the rose here does not appear to be GV. I don't know who propagated this plant. It was donated to us for the sale 2 years ago, IIRC, and was left over. I said she could have it when the one she bought in Sacto turned out to be a different rose. I guess we will have to propagate another plant or two.

*** Yes, the one we have here is always single. I don't know why I never realized it was the wrong rose, but it is disease-free, and appears now to be repeating.

Now, I'm thinking, if I'm going to put a rambler there, it might ought to be "Ladyfingers." If this is going to repeat, I'd rather have it running up the huge seedling avocado tree, with 'Silver Moon' which isn't good here at all.
