Can a rose bush reappear after two years?

A couple of years ago I planted a yellow climbing rose and by the end of that summer it looked like it was not going to make it so I dug it up.

Today to my suprise it looks like a rose bush comming up just about the spot the other one was. It's about 6 or 7 inches tall with several leaves.Is that possible and if so is there any chance it would bloom if I let it grow ?

It will probably bloom if you let it grow.
The bloom will probably be red and it will only bloom once a season in Iowa.
The rootstock (often 'Dr. Huey') generally survives even when you dig out the main rootstock and the scion grafted onto it.
You might want to do a search for "Dr. Huey" on this forum and you'll see you aren't alone in having rootstock come back unexpectedly.

That's the thing about roses on rootstock.
If it dies, you get whatever the rootstock was.

If a rose is on its own roots, they actually DO come back sometimes -- from long-dead-appearing stumps.

Out in my "pot ghetto," I've got a neat red rose which came back after years, at a historic site.
We haven't identified it yet, but it's a dark red single, probably Wichuriana, at least in part.
And it's vigorous as all getout.

Of course, there are any number of wonderful plants of 'Gloire des Rosomanes' that were once rootstock.

Frankly, if I were attempting to salvage that 17- or 18-yr-old 'Blue Ribbon', I would remove it immediately from its present location, do some serious root pruning on it if necessary, and plant it in a large container of fresh soil. Once rejuvenated, it could be replanted in a location where it would not be in such extreme competition for light and nutrients. I feel that container culture for ailing plants gives me much greater control, and gives the plant a better chance for recovery. It appears that an automatic watering device is incorporated into your beds. Be aware that container-grown roses demand more vigilance than those planted directly in the garden. Unless one provides an automatic drip system, containers require frequent monitoring to maintain proper moisture. Now here's what I'd like to do for the remaining roses in your foundation planting: Remove EVERY trace of grass/dichondra/oxalis; carefully hand-till the soil around and between the bushes -- deeply enough to break-up the top 4 to 6 inches of soil; add a generous layer of compost or rich top soil (working it in to the degree that you can), and then finish with a layer of mulch of some sort. Periodic application of fertilizer (especially now and early in the fall) is generally a very good idea. There's got to be a chapter of the American Rose Society in your area, & I'd guess that most ARS chapters in CA have members who are consulting rosarians. Perhaps one of them might consult with you via email or -- who knows -- maybe even in person. Also, if you succeed in resuscitating your 'Blue Ribbon' one of those local experts might advise you on how to propagate that rare rose so you'll always have one and a spare for your garden. I'll bet I'm not the only one on this forum who marvels at the fact that your roses are as old as they are, look as good as they do, appear to be disease-free and have been cared for by one who admittedly has paid very little attention to them until now. ;) We hope you have great success in rescuing all your roses! Patty, I hope that is the case. The original author whose article I posted has very good credentials. As I mentioned, I did not post the information until I had seen it several times. From your first reply it appears to me that you missed my use of "if accurate" and then my asking anyone who attends a meeting on the subject to check on this point. i.e. I did not present it as something that I considered as a fact, I presented it as information that others are presenting. The internet was originally founded for rapid discussion of scientific topics. Input such as yours is very valuable. In a sense you are acting as a reviewer. It will take me some time, but I plan on checking the scientific literature to see if any of the other virus in the Emaravirus genus have been reported to have such a long latency period.

I know! Which is why I bought 3 bushes. One of them, in my perennial bed gets bs late in the season but the other two get bs to the point that I am considering removing them. I don't have any trouble with my Kiss Me or Sunrise Sunset, Kashmir, Como Park or my Weeks rose Drop Dead Red. If you want a good hybrid tea style red rose Drop Dead red and Kashmir have been good in my bs magnet garden in humid hot SW Ohio at the height of summer. i have had good luck so far with all my Kordes roses and with Belinda's Dream ( touch wood).

If the roses had such sentimental value to you, when was the last that you visited them and went nostalgic over them before the removal incident? Last year? The year before? A 50 year old rose bush that had been cut to the ground, then later removed (STOLEN), would need the expert care of an experienced rosarian to just survive the experience yet alone re-establish and thrive in its new home. A cut and trim 'landscaper,' usually does not have the skill or knowledge base to even cut grass or trim bushes correctly, yet alone successfully do the deed you scribed. Anybody with a lawnmower and wheel barrow calls themselves a PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPER today. If you have such a landscaper you got what you paid for. No tenant gave you a heads-up before the roses were removed? Your story sounds fishy. What are you going to do now? Go through the expense of a legal case against the landscaper? You would have to prove, through eyewitnesses, that the deed was in fact committed by the accused. Hire a new landscaper, give specific, exact instructions as to what their duties are down to every minute detail. Monitor them carefully, every week. Replant the empty spots with a good, new rose variety. Get over it. Absentee landlords as you say you are, as a class, do not have their fingers on the pulses of their properties. You have to live there to keep up on things. This is my observation going by the drastic change in my own old, city neighborhood. Most of my neighboring properties that were once meticulously maintained by resident owners are woefully neglected by the "I don't care," attitude of the tenants and the absentee landlords who are merely collecting revenue, and doing barely the minimum in their property management and landscaping. Gabage in, garbage out.

Thank you both for the information. I certainly don't know anything about roses and I was thrilled when I read your posts. However, in researching Dr. Huey I see mixed messages on this rose.
I would like to see what it does but I am going to move it since it is in a bad spot between two clematis. I think its far enough away not to damage the clematis roots when I dig .
I sure hope so.

Lois, it is a vigorous once-bloomer.
In its day, it was greatly admired (I just ran across a complimentary reference to it in the 1927 ARS Annual.)
But in our part of the world, I believe it rusts.
And I think it will blackspot.

OTOH, what a show is created by hundreds of Dr. Hueys, where the scions died, in older residential areas
of Las Vegas Nevada!

Huge FOUNTAINS of masses dark, burgundy-red blooms!
It could have been bred to create that annual spring show.

At my old home, I had a Dr. Huey left by the previous owner. When I removed it, I left several pieces of the massive root in the ground. Two years later it came back. It took several tries to get it all. Dr, Huey is a survivor!

In Rosedom anything is possible. I had an American Pillar out alongside my carport that died after a few years. In the following years new offspring of that rose reappeared out of the ground in the same general area as the American Pillar had occupied. While I have been in hospital for the past six months, just about everything out there died for want of care, but I noticed yesterday a new shoot of American Pillar has appeared once again. Some roses are just more resilient then others, and, if they are the so-called "Oldie Goldies," they will hang in there at what seems like forever. Guess this is the reason I like OGRs, they require little or no care, no spray, and no fussing from me, yet they are there year after year.

My Dr. Huey does very well in my garden & I don't spray for anything, but I'm in the north. Two years ago it set hips & I now have an offspring with a flower bud on it. Since it grows vertically it doesn't take much room so it's not a problem when bloom is over for the year. It blends in with the rest of the vegetation. I took cuttings when I first saw the rose many years ago because I thought it was so beautiful. I loved the purple red colour. I figured it was rootstock, but I had to guess at the ancestry because I had never seen it before. It's a matter of geography if it's a pest. The problems here come with multiflora.

I am also in a cold climate, zone 4. Can't believe Iowa is colder than Canada. LOL! I might just let it grow where it is and see what happens. I don't really know much about growing roses as I have tried several but they never last for me.
Maybe I am better with pest roses because I actually planted the old Iowa pink rose which used to grow in Iowa ditches. It's the state flower so I though why not.Probably I'll be sorry.

You mentioned Dr. Huey was in a bad spot between two clematis. That just might be a good spot for an upright once bloomer. Just let the clems climb all over it.
