Since everything you list is a nitrogen (green) then I would say yes, far too much. Where and what are your carbon sources? Without a balance of carbons:nitrogens it isn't compost, it is just aged coffee grounds. ;)

Coffee grounds, although brown in color are considered a green because of their protein content. A rule of thumb suggest that one use three times as much browns by weight for a balanced c/n ratio of about 30 to 1. Fallen leaves are the best browns. Shredded paper, paper towels, napkins, wheat straw, sawdust are a few examples of browns. For your 15 lbs. of coffee grounds, you would need to add 45 lbs. of browns. You will know if you have excessive greens by the bad odor of rotting material. If it stinks, then add browns. Good luck with your composting.

Guess I should have mentioned I do fill 1/2 barrel with leaves some straw about a sundays paper shredded .. butthanks for the repplies sounds like 15 lbs is a bit much

I don't mean to be contrary, but once, a long time ago in a back yard that is just around back, I made compost in a pallet bin using ONLY coffee grounds, and it was as good as (black) gold.

Yeah, I disagree with the 45 pounds of browns. I mean, coffee grounds aren't pure nitrogen, they have a ratio of 20:1 on their own so I think you just need an equal amount of browns to balance them out. If the grounds had coffee filters in there with them, that counts towards browns already.

I like to have a balanced variety of things in my compost, just to get the maximum variety of bacteria and fungi. For that reason alone, I limit the coffee grounds in my pile. I use leaves, grass clipping, coffee grounds a lot because I can get them from other people, all bagged and ready to go. My own weeds, prunings, and kitchen scraps round it out.

This is the season for other people's decorative straw bales, jack-o-lanterns, and corn stalks as well. Stock pile those browns come November!

Yes. You are right Petalpatsy 3 to 1 as I suggested would be too much carbon. With coffee as the only green, 50/50 would be good. BTW coffee grounds are good just spread on the surface of a lawn or garden. They will be eaten and decompose fast.

If you pile up any organic material, and many inorganic materials too, and leave them long enough they will revert back to what they originally were, soil, or at least part of what makes up soil. To have good compost you need a variety of material, the greater the variety the better your compost will be because each type will bring in this or that nutrient in greater quantities than some others.
While Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potash are the primary nutrients others, Magnesium, and Zinc are needed by plants in fairly large quantities and many others are needed, Calcium, Iron, Sulfur, Boron, Copper, Manganese, and Molybdenum for example in smaller quantities.
While coffee grounds do have a C:N ratio close to optimal they do not have all the nutrients plants need for optimal growth so compost made from just, or a majority of, coffee grounds will not be really good compost. As amazing as the bacteria that digest that material are they simply cannot put in what is not there from the start.

My coffee grounds compost did start as only coffee grounds but after a while, the worms came around.
What are the NPK of worm castings? hmmmmm?

The only source of what the NPK value of worm castings I could find says that is 1-0-0. Many places claim that worm castings are a fertilizer and the nutrients are readily available to plants but since any nutrient test is looking for readily available nutrients and those numbers are very low then what ever level of nutrients are in worm castings is not too readily available.
Worm castings are a very good soil food, not a fertilizer as is often claimed, and just what the NPK is does not matter.

I guess technically you can "call" anything you want "compost" - even a pile with nothing but rocks in it. ;)

But calling it compost and making it real compost are totally different things and a pile of any one component is NOT compost - it is aged "stuff".

So to avoid confusing the issue and misleading yourself and those new to the process, try to remember that compost has always been a decomposed pile of multiple, C:N balanced, ingredients.

Digdirt-DAVE, I really don't think you could call a pile of rocks compost (unless all you want is conflict). When everything decomposes the final stage of "matter" is humus and I for one don't think humus made from only coffee grounds is any better or worse than humus made from leaves, grass clippings, food waste, road kill and whateva.
