Used coffee grounds are pretty much nuteral. I use them around slug-prone plants to deter slugs (and tho' some say otherwise, I swear by them for this use) But I'm talking about 2 pots worth of ground a day - not anywhere near the quantities that you are talking about. I don't know how that kind of quantity would affect or be needed with healthy soil. I do suggest you bring the question over to the Soil and Compost forum. There is bound to be a couple of wacko's that know the answer. One thing I can suggest....you might want to leak out word of what a great amendment coffee grounds are and where you are getting them. There's got to be a few interested gardeners near-by. Kay.

Well, people say that you can use UCG's straight to their final resting place, no composting necessary. I'm sure that if you had a pile of 70% UCG and paper filters, then you would soon have a pile of 69% UCG, and 1% decomposed UCG/filters. Over more time you'd have just decomposed UCGs. Is that compost...I'm sure you could argue it's a _type_ of compost, maybe not the most balanced, but still useful! If I had that much, I'd spread the UCGs over my lawn, then put the remainder (and filters) and put in in my pile. But as jeannie7 said: "each to his or her own" HOW you use it aside, unless you're talkin' truckloads of UCGs, I don't think you can go "too much." There's so much in one's landscape that you can use it for before you need to start worrying about chemistry.

my daughter and i did alot of research about a week ago online. the general thing we noticed was it depends on a couple things. in the end we came to the conclusion that starbucks coffee grounds, (they give away the used for free just ask for it) are PH 5. how ever i can't say all coffee is the same. with that said if you are putting coffee straight from a new can of coffee into your bin thats more acidic. the acid is in your cup of coffee not as much is in your already used coffee grounds. yes they do heat a bin fast and hot!! i am trying my own experiment. i have a 4'x4'x4' wood bin, it sits in my back yard. we do get cold weather here in upstate ny. i am using alot of used coffee grounds, one bail of straw, alot of shredded leaves, newspaper, cardboard (courigated and egg cartons, drink tray), as well as kitchen scraps as much as i can get, i also begg my friends, relatives, neighbors. my goal is to keep my bin from freezing using no man made heat. so far i have a 20 to 30 degree temp warmer inside my bin from out side temps. so far so good, the bad weather still ahead. enjoy your worms, hope i have helped at least some. good luck all!

I am wondering if those of you who have used it think it will withstand the MAJOR moisture of our 2 young sons' bathroom??? Is this paintable so it can be sealed? I am worrying what the spattering and running drips of water near the pedestal sink will do to it over time if not 'sealed' with paint???? I am still curious about the 'rules' in my initial question as well as these points about beadboard wallpaper. Thanks for the input =)
