how much is too much? how much is too little?

We have slowly been updating our existing 1930 Tudor, as well as finishing up a major addition. I am VERY excited to see how coffered ceilings, beadboard, and board & batten mouldings are being shown and talked about on this forum! They are so beautiful and are very appropriate for our time period house.

HOWEVER, I am wondering how much is too much and how much is too little?

Both of my sons' bedroom walls are in poor condition so I had planned to board & batten them to hide the plaster imperfections. Our master, on the same floor, is new so I planned to leave this just painted. The remaining rooms on this floor include:

Laundry room (poor condition walls)

Master bath (new walls/ part of addition)

Secondary bath ( new walls/ part of addtion)

In addition, I wanted to coffer the original ceiling in our livingroom. In part to add interest, but also to downplay the wavy original ceiling. However, I have noticed that original homes with beams, tended to have more than one room done this way.

Any thoughts?
